N63 increased oil consumption

My 550i now with 115K miles on the clock is consuming 2qts oil approximately every 1000 miles. This consumption rate increased from little if no consumption between 7500K mile oil changes , to this level, over the past 30K miles

MY SA shrugs and indicates these N63's do consume a lot of oil as they rack up miles , however I'm concerned that at this level it's not going to get better, and in fact may be an ominous precursor to a significant engine event .

Car is otherwise nearly perfect ( after multiple injector , turbos, cooling pumps- you name it , it's been replaced ) and correctly maintained by the book . The customer care recall was done @ 80K miles.

What's the boards experience with these engines and the consumption issue as they move past 120K miles .?

But doesn't that "burned" oil in the exhaust destroy the catalytic converter? I would think needing a new cat far outweighs any fuel savings!

I read somewhere that BMW purposely designed the valve seals to let oil pass. But I'm not sure its true nor have I determined a valid enough purpose for that. They did however improve on the designed but I'm starting to hear from BMW techs that the n63tu is still starting to burn a bit of oil. Inspect for oil leaks. But its pretty natural for a lot of 550s to burn a quart of oil in between oil changes

Let your car idle for 15-20 minutes, then floor the gas pedal and see if there is a blue smoke from exhaust, if there is a smoke from exhaust you need valve seals replacement.
