550i its over

Well, the end is here ....

at 122K miles car was smoking, eating 1 qt oil every 500 miles , and beginning to leak oil from oil pan gasket and valve cover gasket

Turns out the N63's Valve stem seals were all shot- thats why it was slurping oil..

Get these repair estimates ( BMW dealer):
valve stems - $11872
Valve cover gasket- $3765
Oil Pan gasket- $2813

and for good measure the engine vacuum pump is shot too - $1846

Grand total of $20,423 for a car that on a good day worth $14K to private party

I have had an amazingly GREAT relations with my dealer SA over 12 years and 3 cars- he always goes to bat for me. This 550i was great for first 80K miles .

I told him there was NO WAY I was putting any further of my $$ into this car- what can BMW do?

After a week of them reviewing the matter - they on their nickel did the valve stem job - WOW. and since they had to tear the engine apart replaced the valve cover gasket too. BMW San Diego rocks. Treat your SA with respect , kindness and courtesy always .

Just got her back , immediately drove over to CarMax - they offered my $9000, Im turning her in Saturday..

Its been a good run, but I kept this 5 too long.

NEVER drive a V8 BMW out of warranty - fortunately I purchased a 100K warranty when car was delivered.

So - now - Ive got a Porsche Macan GTS on way will be here Tuesday- ready for something a little different..

Best wishes everyone

That's great that BMW covered all the engine work and you were able to get out of the car without too much financial pain.

Let us know how you like the Macan GTS. The Macan GTS is in my top three choices of cars I'm considering when my current lease is up.

My buddy was recommending me to do the valve seals soon as well. I'm at 77k miles, car drives great but needing to add quart oil every 1500- 2000 miles feels like.

What did you tell bmw for them to cover costs? We're u still under warranty ? Or just out of it ?

Sorry about your ordeal but at least BMWNA stepped up and fixed some of the stuff and you're able to bail out.

Note to self: Avoid any 550 at CarMax.

Some experience,

Bmw replaced my N63 motor out of warranty. It was a CPO car, dealer handled all dialogue between BMWNA on my behalf. I had 100,000+ miles on the car. Bmw covered all parts out of goodwill, I had to pay dealer labor costs which was not too much.

Not sure what failed, I got a bunch of VANOS faults and a knocking sound at 1800rpm and above. They replaced solenoids but knock/slap still present. I though it was the timing chain slapping the case but they deemed it was piston slap.

My new motor has 6k miles on it and just FYI I still have to add oil every 2k miles and it still smokes on cold starts. Just one of those bmw things that they deem is normal for a performance engine.

Just FYI, BMW routinely changes the whole engine out of warranty around here in Europe, out of goodwill, or simply because they know very well how badly they fucked up with the N63. I have changed a couple of 750s, and am now very satisfied with my 2010 550 that I got CPO, with a new engine. So far 55k on the odometer, 20k on the engine, no burning oil, runs smooth. I am just getting bored with it...

I would never consider getting an N63 car without a changed engine, and/or warranty. Makes me sleep better at night

I had to have mine changed out 2 years ago as well and I have about 50k on the new engine and 130k on the OD

so the story didnt end as I hoped. On my way home the day before I was turning her in to CarMax - got a drivetrain malfunction that would not reset . Couldn't believe it . Limped home, had it flat bedded to dealer next morning.

Turns out spark plugs and coils were toast due the excessive oil burning mentioned in prior post . My SA stepped up yet again- and had all plugs and all but one coil covered by BMWNA. Very pleased and relieved.

Picked her up and very carefully drove home, then next day to CarMax who gave me the same appraisal - PHEW .

Now , she's got about 13K in fresh repairs should be good for a while. Its going straight to CarMax auction , so beware on on lookout depending on your point of view.

Received the Macan GTS a few days before and its a monster. PDK Trans is amazing- super responsive, awesome handling and amazing build quality - SO Far So GREAT .

Heres a couple pics of the new , and 550i welcoming the Macan GTS home

550i

I recently purchased a 2014 550 xi. I love the car with the exception of the amount of gas it consumes. But I guess that's expected from a V8. I'm extremely disappointed in the connecteddrive. I shipped the car to Germany and the connecteddrive option stopped working.

Oil

My 550 xi has about 40k miles. I was told that these cars burn a lot of oil. Should I worry?

So the dealer did everything out of goodwill and replaced pretty much of the problem causing issues and you still traded it into carmax for 9k?

On the N63, I think it's the in-tank fuel pump. Had it replaced under recall at bout 60k miles. Felt big bump in power after replacemrnt
