Software Update issue/question

I've never updated the software on my car and it has been roughly five years, so I thought I would give it a try to see if it might resuscitate the e-mails I used to receive and who knows what else. I have a 2013 vehicle(10/2012 build date).

I downloaded the file for my VIN off of the bmw.com/update website, loaded it on to a clean, formatted flash drive and received the following message:

"Incompatible software on USB device." More info: on the website above.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Any recommendations.

Thanks,

Bill

I've had the same problem with my LCI 2014 535i; even with a brand new, never before used USB. I've been told it's because the existing software is up to date.

Make sure the flash drive is formatted FAT32, and not NTFS

Thanks for the responses. I'd be surprised if my five year old car has the latest software. I suppose the dealer could have updated it when in for service, but I rather doubt it.

I will check on the formatting, but I believe that is how I did it.

Last year when I got my car I did the same thing and got the same error. Incompatible software on USB device. I tried few USB drives all formats no go. I went back to the dealer when picking up plates I asked the technician to look at it and he said version it's up to date. At that point, my car was already coded so I didn't even bother updating.

You are aware that this update to which you refer is just for the Phone connectivity to the car and Bluetooth compatibility. I always format the USB as NTFS and that has worked fine for me. For the older cars there hasn't been an update for quite some time.

I actually wasn't, so thanks.

May not be worth the bother.

I had just read a claim on another post that the software update restored traffic information (without having to shell out to BMW for the privilege). I also thought it might restore the ability to pull up e-mails on the NAV screen rather than just texts. I had this, then lost it some time ago when I regrettably upgraded the IOS on my I-phone.
