Mines running like a top and I am very happy with it. That being said, they are certainly not for everyone and there are certainly more reliable engines out there.

Junk is a very strong word. The N63 is one of the best V8 TT engines out there. How many high performance V8 TT engines do you know of that are super reliable?

Problem free for me so far. Bear in mind that when one has a problem they post it. Those with no problems have no need to post. So you hear the horror stories, but never the, "drove my car to LA and nothing happened" stories...

I haven't seen issues reported for the Audi 4.0 TFSI.

How can the N63 be "one of the best"? Which ones are worse?

Fwiw, I plan to get rid of my 550ix before the warranty expires and I will not be getting another 5-series to replace it.

I have a trusted contact high in a BMW service department. He tells me the N63 likes oil. He tells me if the injectors need fixed and aren't fixed properly, they'll need fixed again in short order. And he told me he'd buy one, just understand it's a high performance engine, not a Japanese appliance, and will require a little more care.

Didn't sound like junk to me... in fact I'm trying to buy one tomorrow!

Likes oil = burns oil, which is not a good thing.

BMW tried to fix this in the new N63TU2 found in the new 750i. They changed the piston ring design. I hope it works - we'll see if 2016 750i owners report having to add oil like owners of cars with the previous versions of this engine.

Reading about the improvements in the N63TU2 engine gives a good idea of the deficiencies of the N63TU engine (which by itself is an improvement on the troublesome N63 engine).

I wouldn't say junk but I do see a fair share of problems posted here. I would love to get one but I might as well go for an M5 if I'm gonna fi for more power

Almost every BMW high performance engine burns oil, the S85, S63, etc. it's the price you pay for high performance.

This is a known issue with Audi's line as well. There's no such thing as a 'PERFECT' engine.

The Audi 4.0 TFSI in the S6/S7/S8/RS7 doesn't consume any noticeable amount of oil, and it is about as high performance as they come.

I'm hoping BMW got it under control in the N63TU2 with the new piston ring design. They reduced the width of the oil scraper ring, doubled the number of oil drains in the ring, and added an additional oil groove under the oil scraper ring to drain the oil rather than letting it flow past the piston rings. Time will tell if this finally fixes the oil burning issue - we'll find out soon enough from 2016 750i owners.

They made some changes in the new N63TU2 which are supposed to help with this as well, but who knows...

I'd never touch a car with the N63 engine, and view cars with the N63TU engine as lease-only. I hope cars with the N63TU2 engine (such as the next-generation 550i) will be worth buying and keeping, but it will be hard to tell until they are out for a while.

I've had no issues with the N63 before the CCP,
and no issues so far after. I'm at 44k.

I am not sure if it is still the case, but the Audi 4.0 TFSI had a serious carbon build up problem, it needed to be walnut blasted every 20000 miles or so.

I came back from the service yesterday after they completed customer care package aka recall. I didn't even know how big of a deal it is before I googled it. I rarely visit this forum after I completed my mods and now I'm back. I'm looking for more info about the engine. Did they fix everything or its just a matter of time until something like injectors break again? I need to decide whether to keep the car or sell. How bad the CCP affected the resale value?

2012 550iX with 72k miles; no serious problems before the CCP (at 62k) and none since. I like the car, love driving it. And so what if I have to add a quart of oil between oil changes, no big deal.

No, you're confusing it with the old naturally aspirated V8 that they used in the S5 and other cars before the supercharged V6.

Their 4.0 TFSI TT V8 has proven itself to be solid.

If I was going to buy a car and keep it for a long time, I would get the Audi S6, but the lease terms on those aren't appealing. The 550i makes much more sense when leasing.

Not according to the Audi owners:

mine is about to hit 50k in a couple months and its running strong and I drive hard quite often. I did have some issues at first, I blew most of my injectors the night I bought the car, but thankfully it was still covered under warranty, and I had the CCP done and its been great so far. I have a 3rd party warranty for about 3 more years or 75k miles, once it gets close to that time I will be looking for something else. Ideally I want a used (14+) 650i Gran Coupe with the new N63TU engine for my next car.

I've got 59,000 on mine had the CCP done at 53,000 and it's running like a raped ape. Before CCP I added 1 quart every 2 weeks, since the CCP it's every 6-7 weeks. The car has been great and Bmw has been great too, although the dealer who did the CCP sucks big ole donkey dicks, I brought the car in for EDC malfunction (unrelated to CCP) and they said there are service bulletins for the injectors and timing chain and it would take a week to fix. After 29 days they called to say it was done but to come pick it up next week because my SA was leaving early that day (Friday) and he wanted to explain everything they did personally. So I went on the following monday and he was not there and when I got the car nobody explained anything about why or what they did and they tried to send me away with no paper work. When I asked what was done to my car and why it took so long I got the runaround and after 2 hours of nobody knowing shit I asked for paper work showing what they performed and I left. The paper work shows they removed the engine and replaced timing chains, upper and lower oil pan gaskets, injectors, both mafs, vanos valves, head gaskets and other related seals and gaskets. I was very disappointed in the dealership for their lack of communication, I was never told they had to remove the engine to replace all that shit and why it was taking so long, if they had explained any of this to me (I only called 2 times asking if it was ready yet) I would have felt better as to why it took 29 days. I know BMW was responsible for fixing the car for free and I appreciate that, I have a company car so the 550 being gone during that time wasn't really a big deal but the fact the dealer told me very little when I dropped it off and never called to update me as to why it was taking so long and nothing when I picked it up has me feeling like I need something I can work on myself. I've never let anyone work on my cars before and I enjoy doing things myself so this was a new experience for me and for my first time it wasn't that great. I'm thinking my next car will have an oil burning LS engine in it like a zr1 that makes more power and I can actually have it tuned and work on it myself.
