I am familiar with BMWs. This would be my 5th.
Currently in an 09 328i, 6MT, and dead nuts reliable so far.

Used 2014-15 535xi 's are down around 30k with about 45000 miles on them....are they problem cars? CPO is quite a bit higher and. It sure it's worth the extra 4-5k.

Most of the stuff on here is related to the 550 or serious modding. I'm just looking for a nice family hauler that won't totally break the bank, like the older N54 motors...

Thanks.

I'd definitely recommend getting one (not that I'm being bias from owning one). I got mine about a year ago. the N55 is a solid engine indeed. I would recommend getting a CPO or aftermarket warranty just in case. I came from a 08 C300 also because I needed a family hauler.

We have a 2012 535i (just over 82K miles purchased 1/2015) and a 2014 535i (just over 35K miles purchased 1/2014). I wouldn't hesitate to purchase either one again. The 2012 has had a couple of issues covered under the CPO warranty (which expires on the 20th) and the 2014 has only visited the dealer so I could show it off to my SA.

I have a 2013 535xi with 96k kms / 56k miles. It has been very reliable and I have not had to have any major repairs. The only disappointment was the fragility of the OEM Goodyear LS2 run-flat tires. I killed two of them on one pothole when the car was 2 years old. Fortunately, there are many better tire options available than the original tires.

Thanks guys. It's between the 535i or xi and the Audi A6 3.0T, which is a good bit cheaper CPO actually.

I don't know what they are both like in 2014 but I have driven both the 2012 Audi A6 3.0T for 3 years and the 2012 535i for nearly 4 years. Both are fine cars but I would pick the BMW every time over the Audi. The BMWS has a better interior, better outside look, more comfortable, more bells and whistles, as good a pickup at the light but I think better once you get moving, and for me, it just feels good. But, as always, drive them both yourself --- best if done back to back.

If you're not new to BMW then there aren't any surprises with the 535i. The N55 has had significantly less issues than the N54. I would avoid the run flat tires because they tend to damage wheels. Otherwise follow the proper preventaive maintenance schedule you would with any BMW and it will be fine. IMO opinion I'd save the excess money you'd spend for the CPO warranty and put that money in the bank as a car repair fund. Chances are you'll have some left once you sell.

I plan to keep mine a long time. I plan to never not have some type of warranty until I decide it's a throwaway car. But I would not own a new'ish BMW without a warranty. That's just bad financial planning IMO.

Some of these cars definitely need a warranty. So far my 328i has been great. But it's also 6MT, no leather, manual heated sport seats, no nav...as simple as it gets.

Thanks for all the input.

I have a 2014 535xi CPO. Great touring car, loaded with comfort goodies, which is what I bought it for. It sure doesn't handle like my E90 did but the N55 is fantastic. The 19" runflats were pretty harsh for me so I sold them and put on 18" Michelins A/S 3+. Ahhh.

Only problem (so far) has been failing cameras. The dealer SA first said it was due to "corrosion" and not covered under warranty too bad so sad. I was pretty pissed and appealed to the SM and it was all fixed under warranty, new cameras and wiring harness. Also had some front brake pulsing that that SA said wasn't covered but the SM turned the front rotors and fixed them no charge.

Warranty runs out next month but CPO continues 2 more years after which I'll move on to something else. I would not own any BMW without CPO or some kind of warranty, not because it's unreliable but because a major failure could cost thousands to repair. Parts and labor are crazy expensive (same for VW-Audi).

Any merit to the "adaptive suspension"? How can I tell from an online ad if the car has it?

I was in the same boat few years ago, and decided on 5 series. I like the looks better, and was fortunate enough to get one with RWD/DHP and manual too, that's what made me decide going for BMW instead of Audi. Both are great vehicles though, it's hard to go wrong. Keep in mind that driving dynamics are a bit different between 5 series RWD and xDrive, as is weight, ride height, and suspension options offered.

My advice, whichever you decide on, make sure you get some sort of warranty, ideally CPO, neither is bulletproof in terms of reliability, and not cheap to repair.

The N55 is the one you want. My CPO has been trouble-free since purchase (April 2016 / 15K miles covered (currently at 52K)).

I came from a 2013 328i 6MT and I'm pretty happy with my 2014 535i. I had to upgrade to a car that my wife could drive (she can't drive manual) and something with a bit more space for my kid. Absolutely love the N55 engine, smooth, powerful enough, and trouble free.

The biggest gripe I had with the F10 vs the F30, was the handling. The F10 is a big and heavy car. I rectified that with some KW V2 coilovers. Lowered it a little over an inch and stiffened up the dampening, and now it almost handles like the F30 I had before.

I come from a long list of BMW and M cars..

The 535i with the N55 is a great combo. One of the best BMW i have ever owned, and im serious about that. Good motor, great trans, very nice chassis and comfort. interior quality is solid as is the design.

It does everything great, with above average reliability when it comes to BMW's.
The N55 is 100 times better then the N54 in terms of reliability.

Unfortunately, I don't believe any LCI (2014+) came equipped with a manual. At least not in the states.
