Random unintended accelaration?!?

Greetings ladies and gents,

First post, not new to the F10 528i and far from new to BMW's, current 27 year owner of the same '80 633 CSi and more recently, an E46 330 Ci Cabrio.

Anyhoo, back to the matter at hand, the missus 2011 528i (note: only year with 3.0L inline 6, not turbo 4) that is starting to experience something weird and a bit startling as well, unintended acceleration.

Well, to be more specific, it feels like a very brief lurching while foot on the brake, so the car really doesn't move anywhere, and it's very momentary, but odd and scary nonetheless.

if anyone has experienced this phenomenon and better yet, knows what causes it and what the solution is, I would greatly appreciate hearing back, before traipsing off to the "stealer" only to pay a few C-notes, just for troubleshooting.

Many thanks in advance!!

Cheers, Bobbo

Do a transmission relearn . Search the process and it will eliminate it. Do it once a month .

I have a 2011 528i and have not experienced anything like this. Please keep us posted on what you do to correct.
Thx.

Can you please provide more details on your car?
Miles, Last Service performed, and what was replaced. Does the behavior you are describing happens when you are at standstill? Does it happen when AC most likely kicks in or you doing something? Do you have an Audio Amp in the trunk causing extra power consumption?
It is possible that computer is trying to regulate Air/Fuel mixture due to increase of load that it detects. In effect RPM needle to fluctuate. It cold also be due to old Spark Plugs but you will get shacking and potentially misfire. The MAF Sensor could be dirty, as well as Air Filter (restricting air flow). Your O2 Sensor could be acting up but not trowing CEL as of yet. Your HPFP could also be acting up. I thought there was a recall on those for your year model. Have you had it replaced?

OK, details...

77k miles

Regular oil changes, air filter has been exchanged at least once, plugs and coils replaced by the dealer, coolant flush, brakes, etc., but no other service has been performed, dealer tells me the tranny fluid doesn't need to be exchanged until 90k on the clock. O2 sensor is also original.

Stereo system is stock, and as it's cooler now here in NorCal, no A/C employed at the time.

And the 2 times I was in the car (wife's ride...) when it happened, we were at a standstill.

But as suggested, I did a search and came up with this 5 page thread!!!

http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthre...ission+relearn

Hope that works...

Oh, and I'm not sure what an "HPFP" is, but we purchased in 2013 so it may have been recalled and replaced prior, whatever it is...

So FWIW, I will be trying this as soon as I can get a few minutes behind the wheel.

Thanks for the feedback so far gents!!!

Cheers, Bobbo

I would be very surprised if the Transmission Relearn helps this issue since your issue is when the car is stopped.

I had an X5 4.4 many years ago that had random acceleration issues where if you touched the throttle just a bit, it would take of. It scarred the heck out of me when I was trying to inch out into an intersection to make a turn and it shot into the intersection. Almost got T-Boned. After my dealer had 4 attempts to fix it, they swore they had solved the problem. So I test drove it before I signed off and it happened again with a service writer in the car. I refused to take it unless they agreed to indemnify me in case of an accident which they refused. Then the lawyers got involved and a lemon law buy-back happened. It was not the transmission. I believe (although I cannot prove) it was something in the electronic throttle control.

Well, interesting, many good points as well

I won't get to this till the weekend, but it is starting to sound more like an issue with the drive-by-wire throttle control than anything to do with the tranny.

I don't recall any recalls (pun intended ) for the HPFP, but I think there was recently one announced for the in-tank FP

Bottom line, gonna attempt this relearn and see what shakes out, dreading the thought of having to go to the stealer with this issue

OK, tried this on Saturday, and in all honesty, I'm not sure if I felt any difference

But as I rarely drive the car, I'll await the missus response

Think she's having more fun in the cabrio these days

Update - problem solved

I wanted to get back to you guys with the solution to this problem, unfortunately we did wind up going to the stealer for diagnosis and repair

They ran the diagnostics and determined that the cam position sensor was failing due to a leaking valve cover gasket

Both were replaced and all good now, and "just a bit" lighter in the wallet

Oh well, had to be fixed and it's either keep repairing this one or turn it in and start making payments again on something newer

Cheers, Bobbo
