Disgustingly, all around; it's a top-down corporate culture. BMW policy to minimize warranty claims where dealers follow suit to chance warranty reimbursement nonpayment from corporate.

Just stopped by New Century in Alhambra, CA. They will not top off without me buying the quart from them even though I just bought my 550 there 3 months ago... This definitely left a sour taste in my mouth since BMW advertises 'free' maintenance for 4 years...

That sucks. I took my M3 in for low oil at South Bay BMW, and the SA said he could top off for me but decided to give me a low mileage oil change for free after reading the key. In additional, that was after they changed their criteria for the low mileage, which I thought I wasn't eligible for.

That's ridiculous. I've stopped in twice now (at 10,000 miles) and both times been topped off. The last time, the SA gave me a quart to keep in the trunk. Time to find a new dealer.

I also called another dealer (Century West) in Universal and they said the same thing...

You would think after dropping $70K on a car there they would consider a $8/quart oil as a gesture of goodwill.

You would, as would I. Crazy business decision. I'd say that they extended you a gesture. However, it involved not good will but rather the middle digit.

I'd drive reasonably far out of my way to find a more customer service friendly dealer.

Sorry for your hassles.

Both of these dealerships are owned by the same person.

Stay away from Century West and BMW of Monrovia - both are scheisters. They'll tell you whatever it will take to sell the vehicle, but forget after the papers are signed.

Well I had a 2005 330i ZHP sedan before my F10. It had an oil consumption issue as well, and despite everything I tried, it never improved, it only got worse. BMW fed me the same line that the consumption was within spec, but I don't really buy that claim. I have a CPO 2011 535 now and so far I have not noticed any oil consumption issues, but I have only had the car for about 2k miles. I think the consumption issues have a lot to do with how the engine was broken in. Bought my ZHP with about 70k miles, so who knows how the previous owner broke in the engine. I also had a 2001 325ci that I purchased new and followed the break in procedures to the smallest detail, and that thing never consumed any oil right up until when I sold it at about 65k miles.

Not sure if this would help but try changing the viscosity of the engine oil so that it won't evaporate that quickly. Here in Malaysia we are using 5W-30.

I may be wrong here but isn't it the case that m models used to run in with running in oil to bed them in? As in mineral oil so the parts settle in rather than the knats piss long life we all use?

Perhaps fully synthetic long life from new doesn't allow parts to bed in properly and that's why often the consumption gets better as the cars get older, and run in? Piston rings and bores etc settle? I know modern tolerances mean there's supposedly no such thing nowadays, but seriously this must be rubbish.

Still on the bright side so much oil consumption for some means fresher oil :-)

Mine uses none; it's an n53 though so not the same as your bad boys - still costs the same here in Europe as a us 550 though (gulp)....

This is the response I got from my service advisor... This sounds crazy even for a turbo engine but I'm not an expert in these things. Can someone chime in on this?

"the BMW tolerances for oil consumption on a turbo engine is 1 qt allowed every 750 miles."

Hello everyone,

Hope all is well.

Service appointment scheduled Tuesday and some insight before my visit would be helpful.

The last work done to my engine was replacement of some injectors this past January.

My car has since been calling for oil frequently, this past interval being a mere 655 miles.

Some questions:

1. What’s the current procedure for the dealer to determine what the problem is? Is this something that will need multiple visits, where they top off oil and wait for me to return with the same problem? I’d like to get down to the problem now if possible, as I, myself, have been topping off oil upon the car’s request.

2. Does the car save / catalog each time it’s requested additional oil? How does it save this information; date, time, mileage? If so, shouldn’t this be sufficient for the dealer to see that the car has been demanding oil on a regular basis vs. my having to return to the dealer again in the future?

3. What could the possible causes be? I don’t see oil stains on the ground of where I park. Valve stems? What work is needed to replace same? A major job? Is BMW covering the costs at all?

Always thought I was immune to this problem, but now an issue. I’ve also always gotten horrendous mileage, around and below 10 mpg’s. Never complained of same, but my 200 or so mile range is getting to me. Any thoughts on same would also be helpful.

Thank you very much!

My N63 is at the dealer having its valve stem seals replaced.

At approximately 60k miles, this is a $8k+ job (covered under extended warranty).

Anyone know why the valve stem seals go bad on the N63?

Should I anticipate failure again in the future, or are new, improved parts now used?

Thanks.

Probably because the heat of the exhaust is concentrated in the "V" of the engine with no real way to escape. Maybe if BMW had vented the hood (or directed the heat through fender vents) in a classy way...

Wow; so I'm looking at failure again in another 60k miles give or take!?

No new, improved, more durable parts?

Sheesh!

The N63 problems are expressly why I chose the N55 over the N63. I looked at the 0-60 and figured I could live with a half second deficit. In almost 3 years I have never been in a situation I wanted/needed more power.

'11 550i xdrive Msport burning oil

I bought my '11 in September this year. I have now added my fourth quart of oil in less than 4000 miles. Car is super clean, spotless Carfax. Went to local BMW dealer and service rep told me 750 miles is normal for adding oil. Really? Then why is the service interval 15k? How do you reconcile that piece of twisted irony? I think this is likely a design or manufacturing defect because it is not normal for the car to burn that much oil. Are there any mechanics out there that agree?

750 miles per quart is the threshold below which the manufacturer won't "do anything for you".

That doesn't make it "normal". My '11 535xi uses no measurable oil between changes, although I don't go 15k miles. Whatever it may consume doesn't represent a single unit on the oil level display graph at any rate.

A quart/liter every ~1k/1.5km miles is considered "normal" and "in spec" for N63. so yeah, better be under that if you want to claim anything from BMW

This leads to higher blowby when the engine is cold and it causes oil consumption but even then its not at the level of 1qt ever 2k. I'm pulling the cold pipe on the turbo tonight to see if I'm getting oil from the turbo because I read on another forum where a bmw mastertech said he'd already replaced two sets of N63 turbos because of oil issues. Besides oil in the combustion chamber can cause knock and be harmful to the operation of the engine.
Would using a pair of catch cans on each intake limit the amount of oil into the engine? Thus preventing the turbo issues?
