Dark Graphite Metallic II ???

Anybody have any idea? I just looked at the configurator on bmwusa.com and the old Dark Graphite Metallic (that I have and absolutely LOVE) has been replaced, with "no image available" -- did they run out of paint or something???

There is a shortage of the special interference additive which goes into a lot of these paints, including Dark Graphite. Due to the catastrophe in Japan.

Other manufacturers similarly hit.

Interestingly an image does show up on the Canadian site BUT you can't configure it with the MSport option.

The xiracylic paints have flecs of glass in them. Graphite 1 had this glass in the paint to make it extra shiny. Only made in 1 factory in the USA and 1 in Japan. Following the earthquake in Japan there is a supply shortage. Graphite 2 not as shiny.

Gotcha -- thanks for the info folks. On a bright sunny day, the care looks amazing - lots of comments from people in parking lots asking what the color is.

.... not sure when you moved, but the area has changed a lot. We've been here 15 years, and it's grown significantly -- grew up in Orange County, and that area is even worse.

Just moved away a couple of years ago. Responsible for some of the growth, PM me if you want details.

After having my car 7 days, someone backed into me and it's going into the BMW-certified body shop tomorrow. http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=541767. I wonder if there will be a paint shortage or delay getting my repairs completed since I have the original Dark Graphite.

No. My car goes to the body shop today after a 20 something driving way too fast in an SUV in a heavy snowstorm hit me in February. I was told that they have the authentic paint available in the US. It is the exact same paint as BMW uses with a different binder. BMW uses a water based paint which will not work for a body shop.

Sucks - sorry to hear that man, I got my rear door destroyed, but at least it will be the other dude's insurance paying the repairs... I'd hate to have my premium go up because some douche didn't have guts to leave his phone number.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand - I've just called my dealer and arranged an appointment for door repair for 14th June - they know my car's colour is Sophisto Grey (Xirallic) A90 and didn't say anything which either means - there are no problems with the paint or b) they are clueless and will keep my car for a month. ;-)

I was told by my CA that color code A90 (original Dark Graphite Metallic) can be ordered again with 2012 models. Remaining 2011 models can only be ordered with color code B90 (Dark Graphite Metallic II).

Note that "Xirallic" as additional paint designation seems to have been used only in very few markets, i.e. UK.

At any rate, Xirallic is the name of that particular pigment produced in Japan, so the assumption Xirallic = A90 makes a lot of sense.
No idea which additional attribute BMWUK figured out for B90
