Moving on from 550xi

After about 3 years with my '14 550xi, I've pulled the trigger on a 650xi GC. The 550xi has been a great ride - although I only managed about 18k miles on the car in total. The 650xi GC will be a nearly fully loaded car - including M-Sport, Cold Weather, Driver Assistance+, ACC Stop&Go, Adaptive Drive, Active Seats, B&O, and Night Vision... grand total of $113k and change.

It'll take a few months to arrive, so I'll enjoy the remaining time with the 550xi. Overall, I do feel like the 650 will be a really nice upgrade. The interior is just about as premium as you can get on any BMW at the moment, and with it dripping in soft premium leather on all surfaces, and all the toys loaded up, I think I'll feel pretty pampered.

The 550xi has literally been a completely problem free car (mechanically speaking). My only nit (and it's a BIG one) has been the completely terrible run-flat tires on this car. I'm expecting the same challenges with the 6, but that's BMW for you these days. I also feel that the F10 is a nicer looking car than the new G30... same with the last-gen 7 compared to new one... so I'm expecting to feel the same about the 6 when replaced. As I was at the dealer, I spent some time with the new 7, and I have to say - the interior, while loaded with gadgets, just doesn't feel as premium any longer. The new buttons and switchgear are light to the touch, have cheaper feeling movement, and the surfaces aren't as solid (to the tap). Sad but true.

I've historically kept my previous BMWs much longer, and many more miles, so the F10 takes the record there for quickest ownership experience - but, as I said, it was a completely trouble-free period as far as mechanical elements were concerned. I think they worked out many of the kinks with the N63TU, hence my willingness to get into another.

It's been nice talking to many of you over the years here on the F10 forum - I'm sure I'll pop up here and there.

Yes! The dealer was shocked at how little I drove it... but I work from home, so it really doesn't get out on any daily basis despite being a "DD." To make matters better for the next buyer, I rarely carried any passengers... may be able to count the number of times on two hands. So the car is pretty mint, on top of being well loaded.

Nice! I looked at the 6 series but did the M5 cross your mind?

I did. But at the end of the day, I wanted something different. I also considered the M6GC - and while I'd love the performance, I really wanted to stick with xDrive. Despite living with RWD BMWs for many years prior, winters here are just much easier with xDrive. Glad that BMW is looking at xDrive M-cars in the future. They're just making way too much power for RWD only.

I hear ya! Our next car will be a BMW also which will be for the wife but this time it'll be Xdrive. Lol even if my current BMW has Xdrive I wouldn't drive it just because of the money invested cosmetic wise and I'm afraid to accidentally take her into a ditch during the winters! But her car we'll drive just because it'll be left alone stock haha! A 6 series pulled up next to us the other week and I told her that's the 6 series and she did not like the a$$ end. She said it looks like there's no headroom for the rear passengers since the roof slopes down towards the back.

Can't wait to see your new car! Post some pictures when you do! Seems tho the 6 series forum is quite dead?

When I showed the 6GC to my wife she had a similar reaction to yours. She calls it "the long BMW" (since she doesn't remember the model)... granted, it does look quite long. Yeah, the 6 forum isn't very active... but given how these cars are essentially very much the same as 5ers under the covers, I suspect the conversations would be similar anyway!

It took me a while to warm to the idea of going from RWD to AWD, but a few bad winters convinced me it was worth it. Since then, I haven't looked back. They're rear-biased, so you don't get as much AWD-feel as you do in some other AWD cars (which is good in my book)... and now it's somewhat ironic that the xDrive cars are still hydraulic while the RWD are all electric steering... gave me another reason to like the shift to xDrive.

I think the 6GC with the Msport package is one of the best looking four door cars on the market and I agree that the 6 series interior is probably BMWs best.

I agree that having the hydraulic steering on the xdrive is slightly better than the electric steering but don't expect steering like older BMWs. The only thing I noticed that was better on the models with hydraulic steering is no dead feeling right off the on-center position like in the electric steering.

Congrats and enjoy the new car

Agree, and for sure we're not the only one that feel that way, I posted this while ago.

I know what you're saying when you compare the f10 to the g30. my favourite part about the f10 is the rear of the car in comparison to the new one. love how they kept the overall proprortions identical but the G30 has too much going on in the side proportions for my taste. love the front end though..

As for interiors, the 6, 7 series do have a more premium interior but I feel like its literally because of the better leathers. everything else looks about the same.

Yeah, I'm not digging the new G30. It's not bad, but I feel like it's a step back from the F10. Same with the new 7 compared to the last. I'm not a fan of the double grease line on the side profile... and the front and back just look like variations on the F10 theme - not necessarily better or worse, but clearly a variant.

The new BMW front-ends, though, are starting to get a bit too "heavy" looking and busy for my tastes. Everything is over-sized, with the headlights running into the kidneys, lots of additional chrome parts, etc. I'm also not a fan of the hood line that dips between the kidneys but then leaves a weird black area that's not body colored... just looks unfinished. Overall, I think the F10 is a better looking car than the G30... cleaner, better proportions.

Same is true of the interiors. New 7 and 5 are starting to look like Vegas casinos to me with all of the faux metal buttons, multi-color lights... even lighting in the speakers. Ehh... starting to lack some class for my tastes. And if you play with the buttons in the new 7, they just feel flimsier... looks to be same switchgear carried into the G30.

The one place I won't fault it is the technology. Lots of cool new tech on the G30, including lane keeping, remote cameras, remote parking, etc.

honestly, I sort of like the direction that the new 7 and 5 series is headed towards. I 100% agree that the f10 was a much cleaner design, however. my only problem with the newest interiors is the same gripe ive had with BMW's for a long time - the dashboard layout from the e46 onwards all looks exactly the same. if you're not in a 2012+ 3 series, the materials are fine but the layout got really boring for me. Ill be holding on to my naturally aspirated f10 for a long time.

without going back i'm sure during the E series days they said the same thing about the F10 when it first came out lol! i'm sure once we start seeing the G30's out and people start modifying them a bit it might make us think differently about them

I loved my little e46 325i back in the day. I bought it new in 2001 and kept it until 2007, when I bought a new 335i to replace it. To be honest, I wanted to replace it sooner, but I didn't like the styling of the e90 as much. And to this day, while it grew on me more, I still don't think it was as nice as the e46. The e46 interior was just much nicer than the e90 - which was more bubbly and bland. The f10 almost feels like a return to the e46 days for me as far as interior styling goes - it's much more driver-centric. And the f06, in the same "era" as the f10, feels the same - very well thought out, driver-centric, quality controls/materials. The new g-cars, while not as bad as the Bangles, are feeling like an "off" era coming again.

The e46 had something else going for it that none of my BMWs have had since - and that's a silky smooth NA I6. The N54 and N63TU have both been great motors, and obviously much more powerful... but that e46 325i, with its little 184hp, was a charm of an engine. I put 125k miles on it, and it felt better the day I sold it than new. Turbos are all well and good for making big power, but they certainly lack a lot in power delivery and sound. If you haven't driven an old-school NA I6 BMW engine, you owe it to yourself to spend some time with one.

I completely agree! I always preferred the all new models, but the F10 LCI is better looking car imo and it doesn't look dated as much as e60 did when F10 was introduced.
