Need help on brakes
Hi folks,
Need some advise, I have been trying to mod my brakes, my ride is a F10 523. So far, what l can see is brands like from Brembo can offer the front application but not the rear. I want better stopping performance, find the current ride too soft. What can l do? At the same time, i was thinking of using a bigger brake from 550, does anyone know the size of stock 550 and can I use to the front n rear 550 brake system to install on my ride and what are the things to do. Many thanks for the advise.

Tinybeammer bro, here below is extracted from Brembo FAQ and trust it will help you:
Should big brakes be installed on the front wheels or all four? During braking, the front of the vehicle does the majority of the work. Exactly how much is influenced by the vehicle's weight distribution, wheelbase, and center of gravity height. Brembo engineers all of its systems to ensure that the brake balance of the vehicle is not compromised. If not designed properly, adding a big brake system to the rear of the vehicle can result in an unstable condition, and actually degrades braking performance. Brembo offers rear brake systems for a select number of high performance applications. What should be put on the rear? Direct OE replacement drilled or slotted discs are available for the rear. They work with your standard calipers and give you increased stopping power, cooler operating temperatures, and reduced brake fade. It's an engineered balance for the larger, more powerful front braking system. I think you can replace the rear discs with Brembo discs if you want but most people only do the front and should be enough performance-wise.

RC3 bro, thanks for the advise and information. l understand how it works as my previous ride was done so but to satisfy the looks and consistency l am looking at having the front and rear to be consistent and not just on performance.

I think you can still do the rear. Just will lose the E brake. No hand brake, auto hold and etc. For any car with E brake I don't think there is a solution yet for aftermarket BBK.

tinybeammer bro, are you getting the 405mm rotor? Do you know the overall diameter or radius of the disc + caliper? I am trying to figure out if it will fit the Forgestar F14 20" rim.

I've see pics of 16" BBK and 20" wheels both on E90 and F10.

Yes, I know jaekeem has 405mm or 16" for his 20" BBS LM-R. But I measured my rims and the inner barrel is 450mm, seems kind of tight for the 405mm rotor with caliper. Even the auto shop is not sure. Trying to inquire Brembo.

There are several different size OE rotors:
http://www.carfolio.com/specificatio...ar/?car=207405 They are (F/R): 330/330, 348/330, 348/345, 374/370 The 528i and 535i have can have different combination, pretty sure the 523 is 330/330 for all locales. The fronts should be open to direct transplant of brake+rotor -check realoem to see if the part for 'hub' is the same. I have no idea on the rear ebrake assembly. I prefer more braking with the rear like you, but it seems a pain with the ebrake, unless one knows whether it can be done or not. For me I wouldn't just want to upgrade the front, I am of the opinion too much force is absorbed by the front already, I feel the rotors have a tendency to heat up rapidly already, so I have to be gentle in braking, I would want the rear to take up more slack. If you like brembos/BBKs go for it, but i never thought they could be so expensive, it seems like getting IAS/DHP is more worth it .. but thats just me, I want less braking in the front. RC, you can measure directly, just turn the front wheel out, and eyeball the rear, you can see directly how much space is left with your particular rim, given we know our 528 rotors are either 330/330 or 348/330. The shield behind the rotor doesnt matter, i dun think u get a new one with a BBK. |

The F10 M5 has BBK for front only too. The rear has slotted rotors but the calipers are the standard small ones.
