530D, smooth as silk, no lurching or jerking. It sounds like it's mainly petrol models. Any more diesel owners out there ?

Also, may be a function of the extra weight in the 7 Series xi. It is a BIG car. 550i may be different.

Pramit, would like very much to get a copy of that repair sheet. My dealer is uncertain of fix. I have to "splain" to them what has to be done otherwise I get car back with "could not duplicate customer's problem"...like I have nothing better to do than make up shit and try to get them to solve it.

Ludwig and Sealobo,

So are you saying your issue occurs ONLY when it's cold and then it's smooth as silk with every low speed creeping departure thereafter? Because mine is eradic even when the car is warm....It can't find the right response.

I read about this in a Swedish car magazine. They test drove the 523i and said that the gearbox goes into lock-up even at low gears and you get the kind of engine braking that you have with a manual gearbox. The writer thought it was a normal feature of the 8sp gearbox, but it could also be a malfunction I guess.

that should only happen in sports mode. i am saying that because my e90 in DS mode used to powerbrake.

Hi
I have the same issue too, mine is a 528i. I told the dealer about it and he said it was normal!! Since there is a fix, I guess it's time to complain.

Lightbulb Here's the repair sheet

As promised... here's my repair sheet. If your car is doing the lurching/jerking between 0 and 10mph when you start slowly from a full stop (cold, or warm) take it in to your dealer to get it fixed. You should NOT have that problem. There IS a fix and you can take in my repair sheet to show them what they need to do to fix it.

Best of luck!

Pramit

I drove a 530d today and, as promised in my earlier reply, I made a point of trying to repeat your problem.
Not a hint of hesitation, even at the slowest speeds possible from standstill. Just silky smooth in all conditions and I'm convinced - these BMW big diesels just get better and better.

Same thing here. Haven't not really driven around on sport mode. Also the car shakes a bit when I first start it, anyone else getting that as well? Otherwise I do get the jerking very rarely when the car is warm but otherwise it's been very smooth.

Yes, when my engine is cold after first starting it, the whole car will shake while the engine idles at a stoplight. It does this only for the first couple of minutes after it runs. I look down at the tach and it starts shaking at about 600 - 650 rpm. Maybe the idle is set too low when the car is cold.

And this isn't an auto tranny issue, because I have a 6MT. This issue occurs with the clutch pedal out with the shifter in neutral. Or with the car in first gear and the clutch pedal in.

Yep. Not all the time. But if I start the car and sit there trying to mess with the seat or radio, the car shakes a bit. Not major but it's noticeable.

Pramit!

You are righteous and mighty!!!! Thank you for posting that for us. What you describe is textbook what I'm experiencing right now, and hopefully my hour in traffic tonight, jerking and lurching forward will be one of my last!! As time goes on, I hope others who have this issue post their appreciation of you for sharing this info with us!!

You Rock!

Be nice to the guys at your shop. And be prepared for a wait of a few days while the part gets there. I dropped my car off on a Monday and got it back on a Friday.

Best of luck! Hiccups are no fun. When I got her back, fixed, I almost had an instinctive tensing when I started driving in anticipation of the jerk.

Pramit,

Thanks much for the info. This is exactly what I am experiencing. You saved me many trips to dealer where they "cannot duplicate customer's problem". Thanks again.

Got my 535i today, July 6 build. Drove 200 miles and about 3 hours, with and without traffic. Smooth as silk. Very linear and predictable in Normal and Sports mode. No issues to report.
