BMW Maintenance Plan
Hello everyone:
I'm approaching my lease end and considering buying my car. Should I get the Maintenance plan or the warranty plan or both? Keep in mind if I get both, this would be an additional 5k to the purchase price. I drive around 15000 miles/year. Your input is appreciated. Thanks. |

I would personally not get either one. If I were concerned about the car's reliability, I'd consider leasing a new one again. I bought a 2008 E92 at the end of its lease and kept it for 3 more years without extended warranty or maintenance. While my annual mileage was much lower than yours, I had only an alternator and battery replacement (~$1,300) during that time.

Sphinx - What model F10 do you have? If it's a 528 or 535, I'd probably say go without the extended warranty. Certainly without the maintenance plan. But if it's a 550, I'd perhaps more closely consider the extended warranty.
I've owned two 3 series well after their warranty period (both from new for about 6.5 years a piece). My experience was such that the extended warranty would have cost me more. But then again, I may have just been lucky, and those were 3ers... much less expensive to maintain (in general) than a 5-series. Have you had any significant problems with the car to-date? I'm guessing not if you're looking to buy it. Like I said, unless it's the 550 (which some have had very costly and major problems occur), I think the other models are pretty solid. It's unusual to have a repair bill that approaches what your extended warranty would cost. If you feel the car is beginning to be troublesome, you can always sell it and move on. But I wouldn't sink $5k into coverage. Set the $5k aside, if you must, and draw down on it as the car needs maintenance or repairs.

I have a 528. I've only had two issues with this car. First, that was the front rotors changed at 12000 and the second was fuel pump change at 20000. Other than that it's the regular maintenance. The car is in really good shape and I take good care of it, that's why I thought of buying it until the new model is out. Cost of buying this car will be a lot less than leasing a new car. It's the same model anyway. Sometimes they run a special on the maintenance plan. Usually it's around $2295 but they go as low as $1800 sometimes. I might consider it then if it's worth it. |

What's covered by "maintenance"? I would think it would pay only if there was a brake pad/rotor replacement during the extended maintenance period. If not, that's a lot of wiper blade inserts.

Like I said, I'd forego both plans. I think with a relatively trouble-free 528, it's worth the risk. Of course, anything can happen... but if you'll have the car for only another year or two out of warranty, you're the first owner, you've maintained it well, etc... I think the risk is low than you'll spend more than $5k in collective maintenance and repairs during that time.

Whether you want to do an extended warranty depends on how risk adverse you are. These companies that offer these warranties are betting that they will pay out less for repairs than the cost of the warranty. So all else equal, odds are in your favor to spend less money repairs of the car than paying for the warranty up front.

I have a 2011 550i Msport with roughly 47k miles. BMW says extended warranty alone will be near $5k. I called a local BMW service shop for their advice and they recommended getting the warranty since it is a 550i. He says you will roughly spend $2500 per year on "leaks", and after 75k miles the "honeymoon is over."
He said to look into other 3rd party warranty companies, but noted that none of the warranty companies want to pay out when it comes time to have repairs done. Makes me really frustrated. Any thoughts or advice? |
