Google maps and your car

Guys,

Happy CNY! It's been a while since I last posted here.

Any way, I noticed something with my iphone and my car when I tried the new Google maps the other day. Not sure if you guys are aware of this function. In case you don't, here you go.

1. Make sure your iphone is connected to your car via bluetooth.
2. Enter your destination in Google Maps.
3. Press "start."

Your phone will communicate to you via the car's speakers. Give it a try. I found it quite useful and I don't need my GPS anymore or look at my iphone for directions when driving.

Hey bro, long time no see.

Yup, works for me too. I used google maps in the states during my vocation. Very useful and accurate. Saved the GPS rental.

This works well when inputting destination in both places. You get turn by turn and maps from the car and voice from google through the speakers. I rarely use this except going somewhere I am unfamiliar with but it works well.

I've been doing this for awhile using the Waze Navigation app which IMHO gives better directions incorporating traffic than Google Maps. Waze also works via Bluetooth on both Android and iPhone devices.

Both Google Maps & Waze works on iPhone 4, 4S, and 5 platforms as long as you are using the latest IOS from Apple.

Also, don't forget that Waze also incorporates traffic patterns and hazards when giving directions. The application also warns of Red-Light, Speeding Cameras, and Speed Traps! Social Networking at its best!!

I don't get it. What's the advantage over just using the car's nav system?

Easy. Nav system is not standard in Hong Kong. And if you need to add that, it is going to cost USD10,000 extra due to 115% tax in Hong Kong. Further, BMW HK charges USD500 for yearly Nav updates and the map updates are still not on par as Google map.......

And the Google map and others have features that BMW NAV locally just cannot match. For instance, Google map has local traffic information. Sygic has speed trap warnings..... etc And costs way less than the BMW NAV option.....

The BMW nav system in US is just plain dumb. It cant tell the difference between north and south ends of long streets (i.e North Wilshire Blvd vs South Wilshire Blvd.)

It cant find local businesses, its too slow, its really sub par, in my opinion.

Just for fun, try to find a mercedes benz dealer using the car's nav...
