F10 BMW connects to iPhone ONLY with Apple's lightning cable?!?

Forgive my ignorance, but my last BMW was a 1999 model and getting the CD player option was a big deal. I just got a 2013 535i and had been connecting my iPhone 6s Plus with the lightning cable it came with to the center USB port to control Spotify and Stitcher. The cord doesn't need to be longer than 6", so I tried replacing it with a Belkin 6" braided cable. It charged the phone but didn't transmit any data. I went back to my Apple cable and it worked. Is this normally the case, or do I have a bad cable? I'm returning the Belkin and will get the 0.5m Apple branded lightning cable, but I just can't believe the Belkin cable doesn't work.

sometimes some cheap aftermarket ones only charge and dont sync data, surprised yours didnt work, I usually stay OEM apple because i've had bad experiences with batteries by using non oem ones.

Thanks guys, I guess I'll just get a shorter Apple cable. Probably just a fluke, oh well.

Definitely considering getting the universal snapin adapter. I'm making a trip to the dealer tomorrow so I'll check it out.

I got mine for my iPhone 5s off of eBay. IIRC, it cost around $100. Make sure you get the right one. I also had to code my car to recognize the digital signal from the adapter. I really like having the adapter; the only "issue" is the phone won't fit with a case installed.

I talked to the dealership and they actually let me try one out. Turns out they have not had a single person say that the snapin adapter works with their iPhone 6, 6+, 6s, or 6s+. When I plugged mine in, the phone started charging but it wouldn't show up in the external devices.

However, you say that you had to code your car to recognize the digital signal from the adapter - is that a function of the CIC in your 2012 v. NBT in 2013+? That's just conjecture on my part.

In any event, I'm planning on asking the dealer to update my firmware/I-Step to the most current version and then giving the adapter a shot. I don't use a case on my iPhone, so that isn't a problem for me.

Don't know. I believe I found the solution to my issue online somewhere...
