Engine oil for N55 which viscosity ?

Hello,

For a N55 engine which viscosity do you advise me ?
I hesitate between :

- Fuchs GT1 5w40 which meets BMW LL04
- Fuchs GT1 5w30 which meets BMW LL04 and Porsche C30
- Castrol Edge Titanium 0w40 which meets BMW LL04

Thank in advance

Use mobile 1 0w40. Quality oil at cheap price and be done with it.

I've been quite happy with Liqui Moly 5w40 for the last 2 oil changes.

I've heard that M1 0w40 no longer BMW LL-01 approved oil. Is it true?

Technically it's no longer approved but I know plenty of people that still run it no problem. I use amsoil 0w40 European formula

The BMW dealer (I live in Germany) does not recommend me to use oils which don't meet LL04 specs.
He said me that the The 3-way catalyst can be damaged...

What do you thing about this ?

DO NOT use mobil 1. i wouldnt recommend 0w40 either. your car will be happiest and very smooth with a good quality 5w40 oil.

i dont see how the fact they are two different engines has anything to do with wanting to run thinner oil. if anything, doesnt it make sense to use THICKER oil for the higher performance, turbo engine for better protection? I just dont see how 0w-30 is healthy for an engine especially in the long run. all bmw's whether its my N52, an N55 or whatever you want are designed to run with thick oil and have good bearing clearances.

Thick oil is for "loose" engines.... Thinner oil is for "tight" engines...

I don't see how you can recommend different viscosity oils for the engine you did not design. BMW engineers and Mobile 1 chemists recommend to use their 0W40, but you recommend other viscosity is nonsense. Use what is recommended by Oil brands or BMW. Don't waste time and money trying to find high performance oil, because engine pistons won't fly away from its housing.

So you're the one the designed the engine then? my original message was directed towards the original poster, not for you. I could really care less what you put into your car if you're not gonna at least accept and consider other peoples ideas and opinions. Mobil 1 is shit oil, its watered down and doesnt protect your engine anywhere near as well as castrol would. I dont see any point in looking for racing oil when you can buy something like AMSOIL or Castrol which will protect your bearings just fine. I specified a specific oil weight which is best for your engines, not go look for high performance racing oil.

yes, 100% agreed. BMW engines have very, very loose bearing clearances. you can run 5w-40 in any engine without a problem, as you should. its the best protection if you run it hard.

I wouldn't trust Castrol at all They sued to have mineral oil reclassified as synthetic if it was reformulated. Mobil1 is completely 100% synthetic. I'll stick with the original, 25K mile/1 year oil change interval manufacturer. I'd use Amsoil if I could get it locally (non shipped).

nonsense, Mobil 1 is garbage. the castrol german formula is fully synthetic and basically some of the best you can get for your car.

Pick one from suggested type & brand. You will not have any problem. Your engine will fail from craftsmanship before oil lube.

Oil threads are always fun, people love to share their hocus pocus.

Use a high quality FULL SYNTHETIC LL-01 approved oil (if in North America), with regular maintenance intervals and you won't have any issues.

Personally I use Castrol Edge Euro-blend 0w-40, and I plan on using that in any BMW engine so long it holds the LL-01 certification (and obviously unless the engine specifies otherwise).
