I've been quite happy with Liqui Moly 5w40 for the last 2 oil changes.

Technically it's no longer approved but I know plenty of people that still run it no problem. I use amsoil 0w40 European formula

The BMW dealer (I live in Germany) does not recommend me to use oils which don't meet LL04 specs.
He said me that the The 3-way catalyst can be damaged... What do you thing about this ? |

DO NOT use mobil 1. i wouldnt recommend 0w40 either. your car will be happiest and very smooth with a good quality 5w40 oil.

i dont see how the fact they are two different engines has anything to do with wanting to run thinner oil. if anything, doesnt it make sense to use THICKER oil for the higher performance, turbo engine for better protection? I just dont see how 0w-30 is healthy for an engine especially in the long run. all bmw's whether its my N52, an N55 or whatever you want are designed to run with thick oil and have good bearing clearances.

Oil threads are always fun, people love to share their hocus pocus.
Use a high quality FULL SYNTHETIC LL-01 approved oil (if in North America), with regular maintenance intervals and you won't have any issues. Personally I use Castrol Edge Euro-blend 0w-40, and I plan on using that in any BMW engine so long it holds the LL-01 certification (and obviously unless the engine specifies otherwise).
