HELP: I screwed up my car coding with BimmerLink
Edit: coding with BimmerCode
Hello. I have a 2013 530i (F10). All was well after I coded and registered my battery using BimmerCode and BimmerLink (Android). Then for some reason I decided to try some of the other codes so I went into "Instrument Cluster" and changed "Digital speed in board computer" to "active". I got an coding error, perhaps this coding is not compatible with my car (see below). I attempt to recover from a backup at Instrument Cluster for which I got messages everytime I coded something but that doesn't work. I attempt recovery and it takes me back to the "Connect" main app menu. I tried disconnecting/reconnecting the OBD, app, turning off the car and putting it back in ignition. No luck. Right now the car dashboard (speedometer etc) don't work though visible. I also get errors: Instrument cluster Cornering ability restricted Level control failure Collision warning failure Sos call system failure Wth do I do? How do I restore? I thought restore would be functional but it isn't. Panicking here so any advise would be helpful. Edit: I can export backups from the main menu and save them but I haven't attempted an import in fear of erasing the current backups. Thanks Last edited by boeder; 11-19-2023 at 09:32 PM.. |

Stephan from BimmerCode support replied to my email telling me they're working on this issue (inability to restore I presume) and an update will be released in the next hours. I'm cautiously optimistic.

BTW...have you watched ANY of the many videos on YouTube on using this app? If not, they can be very helpful in relieving some fears...especially when you get error codes immediately after coding something.
Also, are you sure your "NEW" battery is charged up completely? Even though its new...it could have been sitting on the shelf long enough to not be completely charged. And coding without having enough power is a #1 coding killer. Good luck...I hope you can back out of whatever happened. See the restoring from back up info below from the Bimmercode.app for IOS and Android:

It was only after a few hours that I decided to do more coding that I screwed up the Instrument Cluster due to a coding error – pretty sure because the module I modified was incompatible with my car. I relied on the fact that the app could restore the backup which it wasn't able to do. Thanks bud, I tried the restore per the manual for Android but that didn't work. I'll give the new app update a try in a few hours, fingers crossed. |

I'm impressed with BimmerLink's turn around on that.

My cell phone froze during coding (that i was doing) and i had to take my car to the tuner to have it re coded.
I had every CEL on my dash and had no speedo or any instruments

Hmmm, this makes me think I should check my Bimmercode and Bimmerlink apps to see if they need updates.

Good news, and now you can take a deep breath!
So curious, what are the advantages of BC/BL over Protools? I've been toying around with the idea of getting one or the other (using Foxwell 530 for now, ISTA seems daunting) and just wondering what the consensus is. Good talk. |

There were certain things I wanted to code…hopefully a one & done affair…and the BimCode app wasn’t expensive and easy to use. The dongle worked with its sister diagnostic app (BimLink) which allows ease of registering a new battery (and coding it if necessary with the BC app). The diagnostic capability of BimLink is enough for a casual user to pull & reset codes. I don’t remember ProTools when I was in the market for coding access…but I’m sure they have a website…just as BimCode & BimLink does…so you can see what the app offers and the dongles or other connections you can use to connect with the apps.

Not familiar with Protools but they use Autel in some shops here, and several people couldn't register my non-OEM battery. I found that BC/BL were easy to use and noob-friendly plus a lot of online videos on how-to particularly when it comes to coding and registering batteries which I then replicated easily. |

Shortly after purchasing my "new-to-me" BMW I was indoctinated into the joys of the "Increased Battery Discharge While Stopped" message and had to get a BMW code reader right away. BimmerLink did the trick and I was able to dial into the CA Handle that was shorting out when it sat in the rain. The one feature that I do enjoy with BL is the dashboard. I leave the dongle plugged in to my OBD port 24/7 and whenever I want to check readings (such as Coolant Temp, Tranny Temp, Oil Pressure, Battery Voltage, Boost Pressure, etc) I just open the app - go to the dashboard that I've set up and they're all there in one stop viewing. BL will also allow you to reset service intervals (such as engine oil changes, brake changes, etc). BC I've used for one-and-done sorts of settings I wanted to change. Heck, it was worth the $35 just to kill the nag screen on start up. It has most of the common coding changes already set up for a novice to easily change - such as seat belt chime/indicator delete, 5 click turnsignal, turnsignal on the HUD, change annimation screen on startup, and many fob related settings (windows & mirrors open/close, etc) If you need to code new fuel injectors, I doubt BC will help ya. OP: Thanks for this thread! Unfortunately, this is not the first one I've read about where a person had issues re-installing a backup file using BC. It was refreshing to hear that their customer support seemed to be on point! |

I had a similar issue, local tuner was able to "Dial In" and get it all reloaded for me. BMW wouldn't even touch it. I learned quite a bit from that experience. Havent touched BC or BL since (Even though it wasnt the app, it was a phone issue)...
