I have begun a new thread with this as I've seen so many other threads and posts regarding winter tyres, and I would have had to post the same info in all of them; also I've posted this in the UK sub-forum as the information is correct (to the best of my knowledge) for the UK and Europe but not sure about other markets like the US.

I have attached an Excel file/table (and a pdf scan of the same table) showing a list of the various model options, the normal (summer tyre) fitment, whether these are run-flat or not, and then the direct replacement winter tyre options.

F10_11 Winter Tyres.pdf

F10_F11 Winter Options.zip

If you're on 17" wheels to start with (which seems very rare on this forum!), then you've got fewer problems, but I've listed the winter tyres (RFT and non-RFT) that are manufactured for the European market and whether they're homologated by BMW (* marked on the sidewall), well I haven't shown all non-run flat winters that aren't * marked otherwise the list would have been too long.

If you've got 18" or 19" wheels, the BMW dealership's core offer is a seperate set of 17" wheels with winter tyres (and for them to store your existing wheels and tyres during the winter). If like me you'd prefer to just buy winter tyres that fit on your existing wheels, then I've listed the only tyres available/manufactured for this purpose.

The choices become more restricted on the wider rear axle fitments on 18" (SE option or M Sport standard) and 19" (option on SE and M Sport), but Pirelli do make winter tyres for a direct replacement, and if you can't get the rears you can fit the front size all round (they will fit on the wider rims for both 18" and 19").

Some may ask whether it's worth having a winter tyre in such large/wide tyre sizes, and technically the wider the tyre the harder it is to cut through snow (the snow-shoe effect), but they are significantly better than normal summer tyres - I speak from experience:

Last winter (which was pretty bad in the Peak District of Derbyshire) I fitted a set of Pirelli Sottozero winters on my existing 18" wheels (245/40R18) on the E61 I was driving then. They were absolutely amazing in terms of gripping in all but the very worst conditions. They were run-flats so I didn't have the "what happens if I have a puncture?" or "will it soften the handling?" issues, the only thing they weren't was OE homologated by BMW.

All these tyres will be fairly rare in the UK, but if you start making enquiries now with any decent tyre retailer or the BMW dealership, they should be able to badger their suppliers to source a set, even from stock elsewhere in Europe.

If you're on 20" wheels then no-one makes a direct replacement winter tyre, so you're going to have to go down in wheels size, but at least you can look at the table and choose which wheel size you want.

Have a look and ask if you have any further questions.

You can get most sizes and a good choice of brands at mytyres.co.uk. Delivery is usually 5 days or so. Best reviews to be found on US website tirerack.com.

Hi,

Great information.

i have a collegue with an F11 MSport 520d and he wants to use my spare winter option E60 M5 wheels and tyres this winter.

They are fitted with the Conti T810S 245/45/18's listed on your sheet, but they are on the BMW 184M alloys, 18x8 ET14.

Do you know if these will these fit ? I have a few people wanting to buy them now, but want my mate to have first dibs (if they'll fit)

Many thanks

Hi biscuits - I remember asking about this and I assume you were unable to physically offer them up to your mate's car?

The tyre size is not really relevant, it's the wheel offset that is the issue and these are somewhat different to the f10 18" wheels but I'd love to know if they'll fit without fouling. They might look a bit odd but I wouldn't care about that.

The offset is +16mm, which is a lot. It means the wheel/tyre will sit 16mm further out towards the wheelarch/curb, this is good because there will be no chance of suspension fouling, however it may mean wheel arch rub or them sticking out of the wheelarch.

Wish there was someone on here that had tried them.

The standard F10 18" wheel is ET30 so they won't stick out as much as the originals. I don't think they'll foul arches but they may foul calipers or struts.

ET is a bit of a brain ache.

It's the distance from the centre line of the wheel to the hub/mounting.

So if the original wheels are ET30, then the hub is 30mm further out, meaning the tyre is 30mm closer to the suspension.

That means if the M5 ones are ET14, then the hub is 16mm closer in, meaning the tyre is 16mm further away from the suspension.

It's a proper head-fook lol

To explain a little easier.
> Get an A4 piece of paper and fold in half. Unfold it and that's your centre point.
> Measure 30mm from the centre line and draw a line parallel to the centre line.
> Do the same but 14mm from the centre line.
> Get a pen and hold the end 90 degrees to the centre line, this is your axle/hub.
> Slide the paper up to the 14mm and 30mm lines to show what I'm waffling on about.

16mm doesn't look too much, but I want to be 100% sure so will try it out on my collegues car first. The ET37 on the rear is the bigger concern :S

Set of 4, Dunlop/Bridgestone for 17 in wheels, run flats, is costing over £1000. Can I use non run flats as there much cheaper. Here in UK we may need to use them perhaps for only a month...seems such a sheer waste of money!! any thoughts please.

That's pricey... I've just bought a full set of 18" Dunlop 3D RFs for 1k, yours should be well under that depending on the exact size (unless you're going to mytyres or blackcircles or one of the other less competitive sites?).

Just dropped a guess into Tyretraders and it's quoting £865 for Bridgestone 235/50/17s.

But yes, if you're not bothered about peace of mind versus cost on a ZP tyre then there's nothing stopping you fitting a regular tyre and carrying a can of foam as a contingency measure..

Dunlop Wintersport 3D

You should all try, dare I say, 'Kwik Fit' I was able to get a full set of 18" 3D V rated Runflats for my F11 530D for £920.

They are amazing in the wet, quiet and a better ride than the summer Conti's.

I cannot wait for the snow, to have a play!!!

The way to look at the outlay is to think that you are sharing the wear between two sets of tyres. My experience last year with an Audi Allroad on summer tyres was to find that I had loads of traction in snow with the 4 wheel drive system but I could not stop! The other problem was that the tyres wore unbelievably quickly (spinning all 4 wheels does not help).

My wife runs a little Yaris and we put on a set of winter tyres, it became a little mountain goat and did not get stuck anywhere through all the worst of the winter in NE of England last year. When she took the winter tyres off in the spring they still looked like new.

I should have said, to echo that, Kwik Fit have some crazy offers on winter tyres going on. I missed their Dunlop offer by a few days (gutted, I didn't check when I looked at prices or I'd have bought them sooner to get the deal). They're definitely one of the cheapest places you could have gone in October so do give them a look yes - good call.

Hi all,
Yes, I missed the Kwik Fit offer, I thought( wrongly) that it would last( alas it didnt). Now they have no ROF in stock not in 17" nor do any BMW showrooms. My tyre size on the new 520d is 225/55/17....can I use 50? With these specs ROF are only in dunlop 3D Sports, which have now become as exp as £280 at some websites.
Did some one mention that I can use any other size like the 18" but then I would need new alloys as well!!!

http://www.tyretraders.com/tyresearc...l&tyreType=All

~£870 for a set of 3Ds delivered in your exact size, so about £920ish by the time your local tyre guy has fitted them for you.

Cautionary note - these guys tend to carry a low stock and order in as they sell, so check 1 or 2 days after ordering to make sure that they haven't "lost your tyres" or "the courier hasn't picked them up yet for some reason" (aka they forgot to order them). Other than that they're friendly guys with cheap prices, and a much better range of rubber than Camskill on the whole.

(If you do decide to go non-RF then the Pirellis at under £600 delivered are a bloody steal....)

Thanks . I guess I can use their fully fitted option to save the hassle of having tyres delivered at home.

You can, but it works out a bit more expensive than just calling up your local tyre place and asking them for a price to swap some tyres for you. One-stop shop though, so for the convenience it may be worth the extra £10-20, entirely your choice .

Just been quoted by kwik fit £1596 for a set of 4 Pirelli sottozero 19" winter run flats to fit the 351m wheels. My local dealer said he couldn't get any, so well done to the Kwik fit fitter, 1 week delivery he said so will order them tomorrow.

Sure I've read that before somewhere.....

£399 a corner is pricey for 19s, but you pay your money and take your choice, if they're convenient for you then it's a value-add. A least you'll be moving when others are spinning up on their driveways..!

Deliberation! Couldnt bear dropping down to 19", options far to expensive as have to buy wheels as well, and for a decent looking pair, thats expensive as in £4k!.

It only ever seems to be a few weeks at worst, so Ive opted for Snow Socks to go over existing wheels instead, far cheaper at £70 and if they only last a winter, I'll njoy a summer holiday with the savings! :-)

Quality work if you're not paying, nicely done.

Letrip, you're looking retail, you don't need that. I picked up some 18" SE rims for £500, dropped the winter rubber onto them, all in it was £1600 - when they're covered in grit and snow I don't want to have paid retail prices...

You only drive on one set at a time so you make the other expensive rubber last twice as long by using it half as much. And it's way cheaper than having an accident! All that said, those socks are pretty clever, and a wee bit cheaper for sure .

Quick one. I am about to order a 520d SE. Hesitating between 17' and 18'. Is it ok to swap tires on same alloys? Or risk of damage to the wheel is just too high of you go through that operation 2x year?

Other solution would be to get 17' with the car with winters and buy second hand set of 18' summers from eBay or equivalent.

Btw any good deals for 18 245/45 RF anywhere? Struggling to find anything out there.
