I believe all of this. I have lived in Richmond for a little over a year. I heard about how tough VA was for a while. I was very careful, but they finally got me about a month ago, when trying to pass a car to make a upcoming exit ramp.......and sold the F10 exactly 7 days later. I am from SC where 20mph over is the norm.

I am now enjoying the suck in my Toyota Camry that does 0-60 in about 2 days, and no road holding ability what so ever. I can't speed if I wanted to. lol

Sounds just like Norway.

License suspended for 4-8 months if you do more than 22mph over the limit from 40mph and up, 15mph below 40mph limit.
on top of that you get minimum a $1500 ticket.

Go much faster and license is suspended even longer and you risk jail time, the ticket also increases.
In the Virginia case linked above, license suspended up to 13 months, AND he might have to do a new drivers test if it was suspended for more than 12 months. Jail or a few thousand dollars fine on top of that.

other examples:
run a red light $830
unsafe/illegal overtaking $830
driving in the bus lane or wrong way in a one way street $675
Driving with wrong or illegal lights, not indicating correctly $320
talking in a hand held phone $210

Drunk driving.
in many US states the limit is 0,8, in Norway it is 0,2, get caught with 0,8 and your license is suspended for 18-20 months.

One thing I thought was missing in the linked story though.
How is Virginia statistically compared to other states when it comes to traffic accidents and people killed and hurt in traffic related accidents?
If a lot less people are killed or hurt, perhaps its not a bad thing.........

I've heard plenty of these stories about VA... none so dramatic as jail time, but plenty indicating $1,000+ speeding tickets. Honestly, he was going 93 in a 55... that's fast by anyone's standards. I'll usually do 80 in a 65, and here in CT most cops will leave you alone (some with a lower threshold of only 10 over the speed limit)... but really, 93 in a 55 is pretty ridiculous.

Quiet roads with a 55mph speed limit sounds rediculous.

Jail time is rediculous.

On the other hand, What everyone is forgetting about is the grannie that follows the speed limit and drives 55 mph. If you hit her driving her at 93mph, she's essentially at a "standstill" and you've hit her at 38mph. Very hard hit.

1. No RADAR detectors in VA
2. Lives in DC, so should be well aware of driving in VA
3. Driving an unfamiliar road in an unfamiliar car
4. Exceeding the speed limit by A LOT

Really, jail time was probably well deserved.

I went to High School in VA a long time ago, and just spent the 4 years there. 20 over is reckless driving. I typically set the cruise for less than 10 over, and only got pulled over once (when I was following my brother to VIR at 15 over). Have some situational awareness, and you shouldn't have a problem.
