That's rough - I can't see how an engine over 2 liters is a "luxury." This is government drunk with power if you ask me... 20% tax... on top of a 23% VAT!

I'm sure you'll enjoy your new ride! Post some pics when you pick it up!

I have had many BMW's. The six cylinder engines are simply sublime, and combined with the legendary handling and controlled ride "define" the BMW experience.

My dealership gives 328xi's as service loaner cars. The engine, while certainly fast enough, is horrible. The sound and overall buzz box personality is just not acceptable, and completely ruins the BMW experience.

Similarly, I have had eight cylinder 5 series models that, while fast, were not as sweet and balanced as their six cylinder counterparts.

if you are going to buy a BMW, ANY BMW, and want the "real deal" you MUST start with a SIX cylinder engine.... gas or diesel, turbo or not. Further, you MUST pay for the dynamic handling on any late model BMW. yep, its $3500.... but it completely transforms the soft ride of todays new bimmers and gives you a perfectly controlled and damped ride.

The current 328i 3 series possesses NONE of the attributes that built the storied BMW reputation. If you only have that much money to spend, better off buying an older preowned 6 cylinder car (all around FAR superior) or moving away from BMW to other brands.

Very true... Before the 528xi, I had the E46 330i - with this very engine you're talking about and I miss so much (in spite of the fact that being freely aspirated, its power and torque were lower than those of my N20 motor now).

So I will tell you my secret behind the decision of getting the Golf R as a DD for my wife, and for myself - as a powerful, capable little toy (when compared to the big and comfy, but without much adrenaline) 528xi: it's just a temporary solution. What I'm planning in 2-3 years' time is swap the 528xi with the M2. Now, how about that idea? I will put enough miles on my F10 before the swap, so that psychologically, the financial penalty of the swap would be easier to swallow... And it being the last BMW in my life (I'm almost 60 now), I will return back to the I6, and in a nice package, too!

Sounds like the perfect combo mate, that new Golf R is an absolute peach, I got to drive one back to back with the M135i and was very dismissive of it before I drove it, but soon changed my mind.
If I wasn't such a badge snob I may well prefer it over the BMW! haha

The R for go kart fun and the 528i for wafting, much better than just a 535i.

Enjoy!

60? I think you still have time for plenty more BMWs!

Last BMW at 60? Hell, we just bought my dad a 335msport vert for his 77th birthday. He says in 3 years at 80 he's getting the M4 vert. At 60 you shouldnt even be thinking along the terms of "my last car".

Good for your dad; I don't dare to ask how an 80-year-old earns for an M4 as I know everything is possible in America (and with BMWNA great leasing policy). However, in my country, at myage you have time for just one more lease in your live So I was meaning it's going to be the last BMW I can possibly *afford*, not fancy! I'm sure that at 80 I'll fancy exactly what your dad does

PS. Just to clarify:
- when I do my planned swap to M2, I will be 62 actually
- my plans are only possible because I belong to those few privileged ones who managed to catch the "free entrepreneurship" wagon back in 1989, when we first got rid of the communist oppression
