Exclamation Super Car Talk - Practical Acquisitions

Looking for a fun car, something that will need my full attention and involvement to drive. I'm a sucker for craftsmanship and precision.

Function is more important that form. something that's fast in turns and in a straight-line. Occasional track day, no gtr.

Not in a rush, can for sure wait for new models to come out.

Here's what i'm thinking;

1. Porsche turbo (maybe the s, waiting for the new 991)
Love how the porsche is economical and practical in every way yet blistering fast and fun

2. R8 v10 (not sure on which transmission, both are fun) for sure convertible.
Very classy much like an iwc or panerai watch. simple yet sexy. Anyone can drive this one and have fun. everyone knows what it is.

3. MBZ SLS AMG (roadster, or maybe the coupe)
Really enjoy the dct and the 6.2 na engine. Great fun for a daily, yet a bit boring for the price tag.

Can't really think of anything else

I would suggest paying a little more for a Lamborghini Gallardo since it is quite close to your price range.

SLS Coupe. The roadster loses its appeal since it does not have the Gullwing doors. The noise alone from engine to exhaust is worth the price tag. However, I don't recommend the SLS if you're tall. How tall are you?

R8 equals poor man's Lambo Gallardo equals a VW

Can't comment on the new 911 Turbo-S as I haven't driven it but I bet it's a work of art

Of the cars mentioned, I would imagine the turbo s being the most daily driveable. I also like the subtley of the thing.

I think the SLS is an easy nix since you already have a tuned CLS. Might just be a bit more of the same thing.

Good luck.

Of the three cars mentioned, I would personally go with R8. Love that car.

It seems like you have the big horsepower thing all locked up between the CLS and the M3. What about going the lighter weight, less hp and better handling route. I would look at a Lotus or even an Ariel Atom. That is assuming you are looking for a fun toy and not a daily driver.

I personally wouldn't pay 180k for a turbo s or a r8 v10..

I would get a used 430 scuderia or gt2rs

Saeed joon, I've had R8 V10 in the past. Such a great car! It's not as practical as 997.2 Turbo i had, was slower also. But the balance and agility was really impressive. And the combination of a V10 and MT leaves nothing to complain about. The only problem i found was the character. It was somewhat a Gallardo wanna-be, which lacked the soul of the Italian sibling.

SLS is not my type of cars. It's more like a American muscle built under German's standards. Everything about it is simple and classy, but it lacks the feel IMHO.

If I had a CLS63 and an M3 as backups, I know what I'd get. A 458 Italia. PERIOD.

A couple of things.....

You say you want craftmanship and precision. Then you say function is more important than form. To me, it looks like you really want both.

I have actually narrowed my "ultimate car" to 5 from current/soon-to-come offerings:

911 turbo
R8 V10 spyder
Aston Martin Vantage
Jaguar XKR-S
C7 Corvette

The Aston may be a bit slower, but if you want precision and craftsmanship, it gets no finer. The Jag is very similar to the Aston in looks/design, and packs much more serious power. The 911 needs no commentary....we all know what it is about. The R8 may be the best combination of everything however.

If you are willing to wait a bit, the C7 Corvette may be a game changer. Supposedly, the interior will finally reach premium class, and the performance of the Vette has always been undeniable.

The M5 and M6 are also up for consideration, but they are just getting so big. It's a bit of a turn-off for me. Really, what was wrong with the size of the e39 M5? Imagine a car that size with a 560hp V8 TT !!!!

Go for a GT2 RS or GT3 RS 4.0

If that's not what you looking for then gor for the Turbo S!

Honestly a 430 scud would be your best bet no question about that. It's seems like the perfect fit to your already epic garage

That's a really good point! If the 458 isn't an option though, I agree that the Turbo S would be the most livable day to day (though I'd hardly classify it as "economical", especially given the premium over the Turbo) but since you're not looking for a DD, I'd go with the R8. Definitely get the manual though, the shifter is apparently amazing whereas the E-gear setup is apparently pretty bad. I've also read that the next generation will only be available in DCT.
