I like the F10 535i very much. It is quiet and very powerful. It has everything I need for a daily driver. But I went with a friend today to test drive X3 28i. I was sitting in the back and there was a lot of engine noise in the cabin. He wasn't racing and just mild acceleration. I am also considering switching to a 528i. Could the fellow F10 528i owners tell me whether there is any engine noise in the cabin? If there is, I think I will stay with the F10 535i.

So u already have a f10 535 and want to change to a lesser 528?? Why? I think if you are contemplating that change, cabin noise should be the least of your concerns.

The main reason for considering a 528 was fuel economy and nothing else. :-)

I'm preety sure the extra noise comes from the X3 itself and not the 28i engine.

Well, you have to think really hard about whether the costs associated with switching will obliterate any benefits associated with fuel savings. You can be sure that the power associated with the 535 will not be available in the 528. So, you pick up fuel savings and lose power and trade in costs. Does this really make sense?

It won't be as quiet, lightly strained and especially GOOD (amazing) sounding as the N55 535i. However, I'm sure it's still quiet, considering the F10 chassis itself is remarkably sound isolating.

The interior of the 528xi with the N20 is dead quiet.

What you experienced is N20 in x3 chassis. There are plenty of posts out there of folks complaining on N20 noise in the 3 series as well. This is NOT the case in F10.

With that said, N20 in F10 is a bit clunky on cold start for the first few minutes, but you still CAN NOT hear that when inside the car. You would need to stand outside the car listening to a cold engine to notice. If I were you I would just test drive 528. You're very familiar with the 535 so you should hear any annoying differences right away.

The N20 in NYC bumper to bumper ~20mph traffic is great on gas and you would probably love it, but getting out of a car that new (your 535) typically means taking a substantial financial hit. I am not sure if the 528 gas economy is worth it, but I am convinced you know what you're doing.

i think it is fine for bmw 528i, i have one too. i just hear the sound if it stops. however, it is so efficient, you will not regret it. if you want more power, just get 535i . i bought this card because of my budget, so i decided to buy 528i xdrive with almost all the options excluding M-sport package .

it is down to the X3 not as good as the 5 series, wind noise very high compare to the F10, I drive a 520d and my wife car is an X3, big difference! I also tried the new 3 series while my car in for service, same story, what I also can tell you the quality is not the same, I know the comparison should be X5 verses 5 series, but I am referring to things going wrong rather than materials used and all, not sure if this is down to X3 built outside Germany.

I would re-cosider this decision. Going from 30mpg to 34mpg isn't going to help much. You'll lose at least $5k for the trade, no matter how they dice it.

Let's say you drive 15,000 miles a year (all hwy). In a 535i, you'll use 500 gallons. In a 528i, you'll use 441 gallons. The delta is 59 gallons @ $4/gallon, you'll save $236/year. To make up for the $5k trade lost, you'll need to drive the 528i for 21yrs to hit break even point.

On my previous F10 with the N55, I was getting an average of 27mpg. It is impressive, being a 300hp/300lb tq engine. It's a great motor.

I have a 528i N20 engine and almost no noise at all, I wish there were more engine noise like my old E60 525i when rev to 6.5k
The X3 is a much smaller car compare to our 5er.
the best thing is to test the 528 out and you will like it if you don't like the engine noise coming into the cabin

I would test drive the 528i and decide for yourself. The X3 has less insulation because it based on a 3 series. The 528i however are much quieter. The only difference I notice is when I really hit the gas, the 528i is louder than the 535i and that N20 engine sounds terrible when it is cold. In my opinion, it doesnt make any sense to trade in for the same car with a smaller engine just to gain 2 MPH in the city. Its not like the 535i is a gas hog, the 535i actually gets very good gas mileage in real world situation.

My F10 N20 is very quiet in the cabin. However, as others have pointed out it doesn't make any sense to get a 10% gain in fuel efficiency if you have to lose money selling the 535i, but if other financial considerations are in play, then the noise level will not be a factor for you

Ok. Thanks for the tips. I just found out there is a possibility for 535d in the US market. That will be music to my ears.
