Hi guys

I have my front discs and pads coming up for replacing very soon.

I am curious and wondering if anyone has gone for the Brembo discs and pads or any other brands and also how you much they cost and where the fitted. I'm thinking of having it done at the dealers for £349. Is this reasonable and advisable or do I have other options.

Your thoughts will be appreciated.

I'd say £349 isn't too bad if thats discs and pads fully fitted at a BMW dealer.

I had a similar thought around aftermarket when I renewed my discs and pads, but in the end managed to obtain genuine BMW discs and pads much cheaper from Germany and had them fitted at a trusted garage.

Many thanks for your informative reply. I think based on what your felt about the price I have been quoted and the performance of other brands I think I'm most likely to go ahead with this. And as you said in the thread link retaining the service history. Thanks for the link also. I understand as other mentioned in the link regarding the dust residue from the pads but though it does bother me as I don't brake hard I find a lot of brake dust on my wheels and difficult to clean I have lived with squeaky brakes in the past and personally find this more annoying. I understand how they are cleaned and if and products have been left of the pad and not rinsed throughly can have some impact but I feel better going down this route as you said.

I've did rear pads and discs about 50k miles ago, they've still got at least 5mm left (I do lots of motorway driving)

I went for brembo discs (only 2part disc I could find) and textar pads - these were absolutely identical in markings and part numbers compared to the 'genuine' ones which came off, the genuines even had 'textar' stamped into the metal!

Overall cost with trade discount at eurocarparts was less than £150, and my local garage charged me £40 to R&R

Fronts I did the same around 30k miles ago and plenty of meat left on them

I don't find they leave any more dust than the OEMs did, nor have I noticed any diminished braking power

I fitted Brembo composite front discs and Brembo pads on my 535i.

Difficult to really compare the brake performance, as my original discs were corroding and performance was dropping off. But certainly no issues with performance, bite, soft stop or brake feel.

I was going to fit OEM, but as the discs corrode so quickly, I thought I'd give the cheaper Brembo discs a shot.

Cost of parts (on best discounts I could find) was around £300 for discs, pads and wear sensor. Costs will depend on the disc size, my discs are the 348 x 36 fitment. Brembo part numbers, 09.C405.13 & 09.C406.13

I fitted them myself, partly as I knew there was an issue with the disc location/fixing screw being seized on the N/S front. I didn't want anyone messing with it, to the point there may be need for a new wheel hub. I had to core drill the alloy hat, with a modified core drill, remove the disc and then tackle the screw by grinding flats on the head. Needless to say used anti-seize on the new screws and also removed the rear screws and added anti-seize, ready for replacing the rear discs.

Sorry it's a trivial question; is composite and two piece brake discs the same? and also are the discs from the dealers non-composite or non two-piece?

Also I hear something regarding the electronic handbrake can be an issue for non bmw garages. Is this and issue for the front brake pads and discs it only the rears?

Composite or two piece are referring to the same thing, the iron friction disc and alloy 'hat', riveted together. Dealers using OEM, should be 'two piece' as described.

Electronic handbrake is just a rear brake issue, but even that can be wound back without special kit. Brake motors can be removed and wound back manually.

Thank you for explaining that. How would a non dealer reset the i drive? That's my other worry.

Same way as you or I can. Brakes, front and/or rear, can be reset through the service part of the 'hidden' menu.

Hi guys

I'm now due to change my front pads and discs. My friend has said he can change the front discs and pads for £50 labour; I have to get the parts. My main concern is I have extended warranty on my car and I rang up bmw insured warranty today and they informed me that genuine bmw parts must be used and the work must be done at a vat registered garage to not void the warranty.

Had anyone had this issue.

Same story with getting the local garage to do the oil change and me providing the oil. My friend said that if he does a proper invoice it will obviously be more.

I tried to find alternatives to BMW's value service when the front pads/discs needed changing and found BMW was best value overall. They tried to charge me more but stay firm on the website price, which they will/should honour.

Thanks for your support. A few other have said the same which normally you'd expect bmw to be higher.

I have a major oil service due in 1700 Miles as well, ie micro filter oil filter air filter fuel filter and oil change. Bmw website states £456. Dealer tried quoting £555.

So I will stand my ground as you said

That said how does £456 sound should and could I get it done cheaper without invalidating the warranty.
It's big money for an oil service I think.

You need a new friend! £50!? it only takes 20 minutes a corner. Your dealer is right regarding extended warranty but with consumables there is no way they could know.

You could possibly get just an oil service from BMW along with brakes and in turn you get a BMW service record.

My car is out of any warranties and I did the whole service myself. Parts cost me £135 for Mann filters from ECP (air/oil/cabin(micro)/fuel) and castrol 0w30 (make sure its LL04). Paid a little bit to my local to user their lift and that was that. I have the CIC system and it was really easy to reset the service interval on idrive.

As above, you can reset all of this stuff yourself but it won't be recorded in the key as it would be if done at a franchised dealer.

At BMW workshop the front pads and disks on my 535D are £449. Rears are £309. I actually think that is pretty reasonable in order to keep it under the extended warranty and no probing questions if there were to be a subsequent problem. KwikFit wanted nearly £400 for the fronts and even twi Indys said it would be near £300.
