I had this same issue with my 2013 550 a few months ago. Took it to the dealer and they tried to sell me the $80 BMW cable. Even if it worked I wasn't going to spend $80 for a cable! I read on a bunch of forum threads that the cable must be an official cable from Apple, not generic or even a 3rd party license. It also must be new. My iPhone 6 cable didn't work and I bought one from the Apple Store and it didn't work. I recently got one of the new Apple TV's and it came with a charging cable for the remote. I tried this and it worked like a charm. Charges perfectly and I'm able to play music from the phone. The official Apple cables work, unfortunately you have to find one that does.

I had the same issue before and after my iDrive update, was in Boston over the Xmas holiday, found a new after market cord lying on the ground, said what the heck and gave it a try and it works perfectly. Go figure.

I had this several times with rapid cycles to charge and not charge. I tried 4 different cables before it fixed. It's been fine since.

For both Apple and Android phones, they are particular about the cords and power sources. I switched to 2 AMP lighter adapter and now I have fast charging. It also came with nice cable that works if I want to connect via USB for ConnectedDrive or my computer recognizes for flash updates.

I took my car to BMW and I have complained about the issue and they will change my port USB, they called me and said it's fixed, if you guys still have warranty then go and let them change it. I will do some test with different cables when I get the car.
