Rear jacking location of f10
Has anyone used the rear open diff as jacking point? I know some people were saying that it could cause damage to rear end but there are no aluminum fins like m cars do on their differential. Other then the four side lifting points I cant think of another way to lift up the rear without lifting one side individually. Thoughts and experiences would be welcome.

Good question, my E60 550 did have the aluminum fins on the diff cover. Even then, I could place the jack ahead of them, on the iron (steel?) diff housing and jack the rear of the car up easily.

yeah. On the f10 we no longer have the fins on the cover, which is used for cooling. on some bmw models, the crossmember could be used for jacking up the car but it is not the case with the f10.

On my 5GT(F07), there are 2 bolts close to each other in the rear, bolts facing rearward. I've jacked up the rear end using this successfully. Not 100% sure if F10's have this. The front has an exposed metal rectangular piece in front/center that can be used. I haven't jacked the front so I only know this from tons of forum research.

yeah, I've come across that document from BMW before, however it states not to jack from the differential cover which doesn't apply for the f10, which is the fin area for some m models. So I'm guessing it is safe to say that the flat area of the diff on the f10 is safe for jack up location.

So I guess what the BMW document is referring to it to not jack up where the cover (lid) is, the one with a couple of bolts on it? Then I guess any flat area passed the cover is fine I assume...

Yes, it should be. That is essentially the same spot I jacked up my previous E60s - both of which DID have the fins on the diff cover. I'd say take it slow, go easy and it should be fine. Worst case, maybe put a 2x4 block of wood on the head of the jack.

I have placed the jack in that spot on my 535 and didn't have any issues. Just be careful and mindful of what is happening as you jack and you should be fine.

Remember that the Diff is isolated by rubber bushings that are prone to cracking. The Bushings were never designed to support the weight of the rear end of the car. The rear most bushing is over $900 to replace at the dealer and requires a special puller/pressing tool.

It lists it as a lift point. I would still imagine it is not meant to hold the weight for an extended time as jack stands are required safety equipment. |
