Warning for 535xd (530)xd owners
I have a 2014 535xd with 17,000 Kms. Last week I made a service appointment and the advisor told me there is a recall for the power steering belt, so I'll have it done at the same time. Appointment was for this coming Wednesday. If you have the same car, check with your dealer about this. Today driving home, I heard a pop and felt a bump under the car. Then I got a warning that the charging system is not working. Then a warning for chassis malfunction. Pulled over to avoid being stranded in traffic, wow not easy to do without power steering. Then the engine temperature warning came up. Checked under the hood and sure enough the power steering belt is shredded so no power steering, no alternator, no good. Interestingly enough the suspension went really stiff, so I guess adaptive dampers shut down. Waited for a tow, should be all fixed tomorrow.

I would have been so pissed off if that happened to me in a new car. I expect a whole lot more from BMW. You should ask to be compensated for the inconvenience.

I'm not happy about it, but as long as no damage was done, it's not a big deal. As an engineer, I can certainly appreciate that occasionally a bad part can make it into production. At least BMW identified the problem and issued a recall to fix it. Unfortunately for me, my appointment to fix the defective belt was 2 days too late. Considering how complex these cars are, it is amazing they work as well as they do with as few problems as they do.

Honestly, no. This is where Americans just get a bad wrap. Products have warranties for a reason - they may break, and the manufacturer may need to fix it. If it's a simple situation of a defect and fix, why exactly is someone entitled to additional compensation in this scenario?

So is this for all XDrive models? I already have an E46 that's going in for a recall so it would be nice to do them at the same time.

No idea, good idea to check though. I bet it is probably just a bad batch of belts from a supplier and BMW has identified the cars that were produced with them. I am a bit surprised that I have not received a letter or phone call about it, I only know about it because I was told about it when calling to make a service appointment.

Just heard back from the dealer, in case anyone else has the same recall and is thinking of getting it taken care of, the parts are on backorder for 7-10 days! And yes, they did offer to give me another car while I wait for the parts.
I think the failure was not the belt but the idler pulley. As a result of the pulley failing, the belt was destroyed as well. I found online an old recall for X5 diesels that had idler pulleys not torqued up properly at the factory. The recall was to use thread locker and torque properly. I think it is the same with my car, when the dealer called, he said the idler pulley failed. Last edited by AVIMAX; 07-23-2014 at 10:12 AM.. |

I believe all of the xDrive cars still have hydraulic steering.
