Looks like replacement is the only option, they discussed the others and did not consider them as likely causes of the problem. The replacement has been ordered and is now awaiting availability, total time may be around 20 days.
Another fact that sort of confirms that it may actually be the transmission and not the fuel lines or any other component, is that when I try to reverse on an uphill slope the transmission just automatically shift from R to N. It reverses fine on a level road or downhill but whenever significant revs are applied in R it shifts to N.
