Custom 550i F10 Exhaust
Im looking to get a custom exhaust, the supersprint and other brands are just out of my price range at the moment. I have a local shop who makes exhaust for Ferrari's and Lamborghini. He said he can do a Cat-Back system for 1200, stainless with Mandrel bent piping. My only question is, What Mufflers would you guys recommend?
Magna-flow? Borla? Any ideas? I want the car a little louder and have a real nice tone. I dont want it so loud that its annoying to drive. I just get myself to spend 3 or 4k on an X-pipe and mufflers from supersprint. The other question is, does anyone know what to do with the Exhaust Flap that the stock system currently has? Do they just remove it and plug up the vacuum lines? |

no offense but those are hack numbers. Spend 10's of thousands of dollars on a car but get a 400-700 US$ exhaust ... where at Midas? or the local gas station?

Yea I agree. I don't want to cheap out but at the same time. I just can't get myself to pay 3 to 4k just for mufflers and an x pipe. The shop I want to use does alot of custom exhaust for high end cars and it looks very similar to superaprint. Only difference I's the mufflers.

cheap out? The exhaust is a PIPE, thats ALL it is. Nothing else to it.
How much you pay someone to BEND THAT PIPE for you is what matters in this scenario.

That is true in any situation, whether your buying a bolt at a hardware store or a house. There is differences in craftmanship, engineering, warranty, etc.
My point is, you spend a lot of money on a very nice car and their are reasons why there are specialists for BMW modifications, I personally wouldnt half ass my BMW with a trip to Midas. It is your BMW you do what you want with it.

So paying $1200 will get you some type of elite metal piping vs paying $500?
Maybe its gold plated? With exhaust work, what matters is the workmanship quality -- pipe bends, welds, etc. You can find that without paying more than double. All he's talking about is removing the stock rear mufflers and doing straight pipes or replacing them with a bit more free flowing, louder mufflers -- not exactly the work of god going on here. If I was going to get downpipes and things that bolt directly to the engine, then I would pay a bit more for a higher engineered kit; but for something like x-pipe back exhaust bits, theres no point. Its about being smart with your money while still getting quality.

There are some that would say the cars in your signature is not very smart with money, nor is replacing a perfectly well designed exhaust.
What I am saying is, to each his own, I am not saying your way is wrong, just given the OP another side to looking at things. The discussion was exhaust, I am having springs and exhaust installed on my 550 next week through the dealer. I could have gone a much cheaper route but decided that if I was going to modify my already expensive car, I would make sure I used tested and true products. In my case that lead me to ACSchnitzer mostly because of their relationship with the BMW dealers here in Germany.

Each muffler should have a flow or Hp raiting. Get the highest flowing muffler, for sure one that flows more than stock. both magna and borla are good but have different sound qualities.
Being that this will be acustom built set up, you really wont be able to know exactly how it will sound untill its installed. I think the 550 is way too quiet i can never tell what the engine is doing unless I look at the tachometer. |

So putting Magnaflow mufflers would be kinda "ghetto"?
