F10 N55 JB4 Stage2 is awesome!

I recently gave my car to Terry @ BMS for testing of the stage 2 tune he has been working on. He had it for a few days and my casual patience turned into a nagging sense of anticipation as he emailed me progressive updates. I picked the car up this afternoon and am SO impressed. I had Stage1 before this and was definitely happy with it - but this takes it to a new level. The power boost over stock is totally noticeable, but what really makes this tune stand out is the 'lag fix' (as Terry put it). The throttle response is spot on and the way it delivers power through the gears is like I shed a 500lb weight off the car. I don't notice a dramatic decrease in fuel economy either - although I am driving a bit more 'spirited' than normal.

If I had to sum up the tune in one sentence it would be: This is what driving a BMW should feel like.

(And I haven't even tried it in sport/sport+ mode yet!)

If you've been holding out for a solid tune, your wait is almost over. They even figured out how to enable auto-clear so any SES or CEL's that pop up from the tune or a down pipe are already taken care of. Once he works out the on-the-fly map switching with gauge controls there will literally be no competition on the market for N55 tunes. Flash tunes are fine - but if you want something that clears tuner codes and can be removed in 30 minutes for dealer trips - this is the smartest choice so far.

I am running map 1 right now - pretty soon I will fill up with 100 octane and give map 2 a shot.

Thanks again Terry! I will definitely send you updates as I put miles on the car.

That is great news!! A lot of us have been waiting for this. Do you know when it goes for sale? It is not listed on the site yet, at least not for the F10 with the N55.

They said it will go on sale after a few people have tested it for a while. I have put a few hundred miles on the tune today and have zero issues or problems to report. With this level of reliability I am sure this will be announced on the retail market very soon.

Don't worry if you have Stage1 - I understand that there will be an upgrade kit available to move to the JB4 on your own. This tune is basically following the same path the E series N55 went through. If you look on the BMS site you'll see the N55 JB3 to JB4 upgrade kit - this will give you an idea of what I assume the F10 kit will look like for those with Stage1.

OMG!!!! Thank you thank you thank you!! you just made my day!

Did Terry mention anything about how our F10 differs from the E9x N55's setup? If the tuning is the same then he should have most of the bugs ironed out by now since the E9x N55 guys have been running his tune for over a year now.

How did his stage 2 feel different compared to stage 1?

You really should plan to throw the car on a dyno to see exactly what its putting down.

when you talk about lag, what are you exactly referring to, stepping on the gas off the line and seeing the car respond? I have stage 1 right now and I kind of like it but I was on the fence to return it since it was not a wow difference. Reading your comments, make me want to keep it and try stage 2 upgrade(when it comes out that is), what's your take?

That's exactly what I am talking about. It is most notably improved in old situations where you're making a right turn, the car downshifts to 2nd gear and when you try to give it gas out of the turn there is a lull that made me dislike driving this car. That is now gone. Off the line acceleration is improved as well, but this is a turbo car so no matter what you do the stock turbo will have lag.

Even better news, the tune is starting to adapt so not only is the throttle becoming impressively more responsive - but there is a jump in power from what I felt driving yesterday.

I buy 100 octane out in Pasadena at a 76 (closest to my house). With my JB4 tuned 335i I run race gas exclusively since I drive it so infrequently. $8.65 a gallon but worth it for the occasional splurge.

100 Octane

Just curious why you're waiting for 100 octane to make the stage II switch? Wouldn't you want to run it with your normal octane to see how it compares on an apples-to-apples basis (at least initially)?

Map2 is for those with downpipes and 93+ octane - since I do not have a downpipe yet, this is the next best option.

If you're running 91, stay in Map1.

Don't confuse maps and stages. This is a stage2 tune running map1.

Is it already available? If you go to the upgrade page you can order the STage 1 to Stage 2 upgrade for $150. There is a drop down that lets you pick F10 535i.

I'll probably email Terry to ask . . .

They just haven't updated their website yet. Go to N54tech.com if you have any questions about the tune.
