550=5401lbs > X5 5.0=5150lbs

This is nuts!

The new X5 5.0 is 250lbs lighter than a 550 sedan?

If this is true, why is the 550 faster 0-60?

These numbers posted in specs section on bmwusa site.

I believe BMW USA switched to now show GVWR for the 5 series (not sure on other vehicles)... so I believe the actual weight of the 5 series models is 1000 lbs less than the GVWR numbers shown there.

So, what is GVWR?

From howstuffworks.com : You can think of the GVWR as a weight limit for your specific vehicle -- a weight limit set by the automaker. Gross vehicle weight ratings take into account the base curb weight of the vehicle plus the weight of any optional accessories, cargo and passengers.

The BMWUSA.com website clearly states that the weight quoted is GVWR, not curb weight.

Go to bmw.co.uk or other european BMW websites to find the curb weight.

A 550i is around 4200-4300 lbs.. and the 550xi is around 4500-4600.

I have a fully optioned 550xi... I am going to get it weighed.

CAT Scale locator for those interested. Accuracy to the nearest 20 lbs. I think they charge around $10.
