Pure Stage 2 Turbo Install is about to go down.

My brand new Stage 2 turbo from Pure has been sitting on my tool box all week, patiently awaiting the weekend. Many thanks to Charles at Pure Turbos for getting me the unit quickly and answering all of my questions!

Tomorrow morning I'll be headed to he shop bright and early to get started on the job of removing the stock turbo and installing the Pure unit in its place.

Going in at the same time will be a Go Fast Bits DV+

KSD estimates this job at about 13 hours. lets see how long it actually takes.

Ahh nice good news. You must have some good hp/tq numbers with your parts and this turbo. Let us know hows the difference and how cool the DV sounds.

The transformation you have brought to this car is amazing. You have posted wealth of information on this forum, so I want to thank you. I hope you have pics, as always, with the upgrade of this turbo.

Thank you, I believe I have every reason to be proud of where I've taken the car in the last 6 months or so. and I'm always happy to share my knowledge and anything I find along the way with others. I know I'm somewhat of an anomaly among F10 owners being so hands on and I want to encourage others to do so as well. These cars aren't that difficult to work on and the modifications available to us are extensive.

I thought I'd leave everyone with baited breath while I bust ass today to get the work done.

I was at the shop at about 8:45am, and had the car racked and ready by 9am. Completion was at roughly 5pm. So 8 hours to R&R the turbofold unit with the DV+ upgrade. This was a pretty relaxed pace with ample time to pound a few powerades and destroy a big bag of beef jerky.

The first matter of business was to setup the engine bridge over the engine compartment to support the driveline. I knew I would have to remove at least the passenger side engine mount arm.

From there it was time to raise the lift and get under the car. Both forward under panels need to come out for access. The ER downpipe I installed a few weeks ago greeted me with a nicely developing patina.

Removed the downpipe and was greeted with this sight

The next 2 hours is spend dropping the sway bar, steering rack, and removing the water pump for access to the oil and coolant supply lines to the turbo. Once those are out of the way you can reach all 15 of the turbofold mounting nuts and remove them.

Pure Stage 2 (left) Factory stock (right)

mmmm point milled billet goodness.

Factory stock exhaust wheel:

Pure Stage 2 exhaust wheel:

The Pure Stage 2 turbo unit with the Go Fast Bits DV+ unit installed, along with new orings, seals, ready to go back on the engine.

and finally the odd and ends taken off to get to the turbo:

All and all the job wasn't bad. My ankles and back are a bit upset with me standing looking up on concrete for 8 hours but I'll live. Packaging contraints weren't awful, but I mean they weren't great either. BMW is certainly endeavoring to fit 10 pounds of shit in a 5 pound bag and it shows when you try to take it apart. If I were to do it again tomorrow I think I could have the job done in 6 hours or less. A lot of my time was spent trying to work around parts I ended up removing after having a stubborn attempt without doing so.... as to say knowing what all absolutely must be removed instead of feeling it out.

I pulled the fuel injector connectors to all 6 cylinders and cranked the engine until it was believed adequate oil pressure had filled the turbo. After that they were connected, DTC's caused by it cleared, and the engine started right up.

Exhaust tone is surprisingly changed. A bit deeper, and it sounds great. Mean as hell. I took most of the drive back home pretty easy as I was tired and not wanting to push my luck.

Mid to upper range torque is fat and abundant, although the car doesn't pull tremendously harder. Alex MissionPerformance told me while the existing Stage 1 tune would be perfectly drivable with the new turbo, to be able to use its full potential a reflash would be required. Hoping he may have some time this weekend if not Monday to do so, but for now the car is running great and pulling hard.

Wow thanks for sharing this information and for those pics. The new PURE stg 2 turbo looks insane and very well crafted. Its very cool to know how this turbo changed how the engine sounds. Keep us posted with the MP stg 2.

I forgot to ask how the gofastbits dv sounds?

Wow what a difference on wheels, factory vs pure. Very much looking forward to stage 2 flash with pure 2 setup. EWG on stock turbos for for the 235 Alex pulled off 395ish Whp across redline, hoping he can do that with your pure. Can't wait for the Dyno!

Yeah I can't wait until Alex can get his hands back on the car to retune it.

I'm still only seeing 15PSI or so at lower RPM's and watching it fall off to 10PSI or so as the RPM's climb. I can hear and feel the waste gate cycling letting out my precious boosts.

Pure states the Stage 2 turbo is able to maintain 25PSI up through redline, provided the fueling is in place to support it.

I suspect a 93 pump tune would be around 17-18psi, with a E85 blend tune around 20. Much higher than that and I believe I'll start running out of fuel.

I want to thank you for posting these mods. Im going to start working on the same set up at the begining of the year. I want to see how far we can push the N55 and still maintain reliability.

Yeah I have the same thing going on with boost and waste cycles. Harder to control with PWG. You're electric so your about to get laced up with power. We tried constant boost and that didn't work. Though I've heard JB4's has a way to hold boost by keeping the wasgate closed on PWG's. Is that true FSociety ? Alex did say I could get a turbo from a newer N55 and wire the pins from my ecu to the electric wastegate for the same control.

I am not EWG, my car is an early production (3/14) 2014. The PWG actuator is pictured above.

EWG started in 7/14 as far as I know.

I haven't heard from Alex for a few days, when he gets back to me I'm eager to report masssssiiiivvveee gains :-)

Yeah your ride must of adjusted. Would love to see some new 0-60 and possibly 1/4 miles.

I'm looking into upgrading my wastegate actuator http://www.turbosmartdirect.com/Prod...oll-26psi.html

I have plans to get with Alex tomorrow night for the retune, I can report findings sometime there after, and dyno results some time after that.
