550i - cut the mufflers off
Anyone have a 550i/xi with the mufflers cut off running straight pipes from the center?
I heard a local 535i with the mufflers cut off and it sounded amazing, however, its hard to tell how the n63 v8 would sound. Was wondering if anyone tried this. I was thinking of doing it, and if I hated it, just to slap on eisenmann or AA exhaust, its just hard to justify $2500+ for 2 mufflers. $1500-1750, yes, but nearly $3k for mufflers only, not even full exhaust? Feels a little rough. |

Hi,
Interesting idea, it has been done in other turbos as well (Evos, SRT, etc.) with good results for short money. I am thinking of trying the Varex XForce mufflers and getting custom piping upto the downpipes for my 550ix. I may try to remove the resonators as well, since the Varex muffler has an electronic valve to open and shut. My car is too quiet, but I'm done with an exhaust that's too loud (daily drove a moderately modded Evo VIII for the last 10 years). The ability to open and close the valves could be ideal. I like the Varex muffler better than the exhaust dump under the car as well, since I don't want the potentially unrefined sound and exhaust fumes... They make a couple dual tip mufflers that may work, and I think cost would be more reasonable. The ones for the 550 I've seen are expensive and aren't even cat/downpipe back.... Unfortunately, I don't know how it will sound, but since I can close the valve it may work. |

I bought the exhaust from a guy that had it done at 180. According to him he paid 1500 but i got it for 500. That included the pipes with the eisenmann replica tips and the M5 diffuser. Resonators were 100 each and install was free cause my cousin has a shop in Brooklyn. Exhaust was really loud but the drone killed me between 1500-2000 rpm. This is my daily driver. Added the resonators and drone is gone but deep German sound remains. In the end, whole set up cost me about $750 and IMO it sounds better than any of the 5k brand name exhausts out there.
