Short alarm and trunk auto-opened?

Hi,

Today something odd happened - I was taking groceries out of the trunk. The car was locked and the trunk open. So I unloaded the bags (had the FOB in my hand), and shut the trunk closed. Then the car started beeping and the trunk automatically opened. This has never happened before, so I wonder what feature that is? Few ideas:

1. Right now I have a dying battery (due for a replacement on Tuesday) so perhaps the car detects low voltage and decides to keep the trunk open so that I can access it?
2. The FOB was very near the trunk so the car thought I had locked it inside and decided to pop it open?
3. It didn't latch properly
4. Something else

I'm just curious, any ideas?

Strange. Sure you didn't hit the trunk button on your fob by accident? I know it beeps while auto-closing... sort of a warning system that it's closing. But I've never seen it beep AFTER it was closed and then re-open. Unless maybe it was some other safety feature, perhaps, if the trunk thinks there was an obstacle - kind of like the pinch feature on the auto windows.

No, I don't have auto-close - I shut it by hand. Yes, could be a pinch protection.

That would be my best guess. Don't all of the trunks auto-close if you have the automatic trunk? On mine you either press the button (in the trunk lid) or move your foot under the bumper to get it to close automatically. If you use your foot under the bumper, it'll pause for a few seconds and then start beeping while it closes the trunk, presumably as a safety mechanism to warn you the trunk is closing.

The auto-close is an option and I couldn't justify the price. Otherwise it opens automatically when I press the button on the FOB.

Wave your foot under the CA sensor?

I think Breach is saying he doesn't have an auto open / close trunk. He need to manually pull the trunk up or down.
I think that also means he doesn't have comfort access so foot being under trunk wouldn't trigger anything

Correct, I don't have automatic trunk closing or whatever the option is called. I do have comfort access, but on EU models waving feet under the trunk doesn't work ;-)

Seems like you can pick and choose options at a much more granular level in the European markets. If you don't have auto close, I guess I'd also retract my guess about a pinch protection feature... as that would only really make sense if the car was capable of closing the trunk on its own, right? Heck, if you're closing the trunk, you should know if you may hit something while doing it.

Maybe consult your SA or CA and see if they have any insight - we're all curious now.

Are you sure you can't open the trunk with waving the foot? I know it works here in Norway when the car has comfort access.

Nope. Just spent 2 minutes waving my foot under the trunk like a complete idiot ;-) It could be market (coding) dependent.

Well, I checked the german pricelist, and they do get that feature. But that might not be the problem you have with your trunk.

But when was the OP's car produced? Trunk foot swipe for opening has been around for a couple of years only, and trunk foot swipe for closing less than that. Also, what is the behavior when a car key is left in the trunk? I haven't experimented on a newer car, but it used to be the case that the trunk would open and an alarm would sound.

Waving foot to open trunk came in fall 2011 (2012 model).

I have comfort access Euro model produced 2013 and the trunk opens waving the foot but only closes with the respective buttons (no wave foot to close thou perhaps some euro regulation).

You can try the voice-activated trunk opener next.
