2013 550i GAS GUZZLER TAX!!!!

Wow I can't believe they are charging a GAS GUZZLER TAX on the 550. They weren't doing that before. I mean I understand why. My 550i with manual transmission only gives me 8-10 mpg when I drive in NYC (Manhattan) with only me in car. When I have a full car 5ppl, it's gone as Low as 6 mpg on 23 miles trip.

But I thought GGT would only be on sports version like M models.. ::

EPA rates it at 15/22 and 17 combined, so that $1,000 in Gas Guzzler Tax.

If you're getting 8-10 mpg in the city...what are you driving and how? I am getting about 16.5 in the city and maybe 18-19 mpg on the hwy. 6mpg and <10mpg is low I think. I'd be going the 335d or X5d or 535d route if I was getting that most definitely!

Is it 1000 a year or just once when you buy the car?

Should be once a year... Sorry to say this, but less than 10 mpg is almost insulting to the environment.

I am a lead foot, and have never got below 10mpg. The manual transmission must be very poorly setup.

However the reason I have an issue with gas guzzler tax is that SUVs eg Hummer and Escalade are exempt. So I can drive a relatively fuel efficient 20mpg M5 and pay gas guzzler tax, while someone else drives a 10mpg Cadillac Escalade and Pays no gas guzzler tax.

It is American Protectionism nothing more, and the government should be ashamed.

I can attest to him: I live in Manhattan and mostly drive in Manhattan. I get 10 mpg with 535i and 10.5 mpg with Jaguar XJ (470 bhp).

NYC traffic is crazy (one needs to break often for traffic lights, crazy pedestrians and bikers, lane cutting cabbies, etc).

OK - I did some research on the EPA site. It states that the tax applies for cars that have a combined rating of 22.5 or less. The 550 x-drive auto has a combined rating of 19mpg, but I did not pay a tax when I purchased my 2013 model. While I am glad I did not pay a tax, I am confused.
