Stupid Question Wednesday

Taking a cue from another Forum. Stupid Question Wednesday:

Does anyone know what that little tiny "bump" is on the right hand side plastic next to the NAV screen is?

My guess is either a light sensor...or microphone?

Don't have a clue but I will take a guess that it is something used in the manufacturing process of the plastic. I don't think it is a light sensor or microphone.

No doubt................but am having difficulty finding a good picture of this. There are a couple of shots showing this on the interior thread of this forum. It's on every car and I agree a part of the manufacturing process, but for a reason. This is not a blemish from the molding process, case in point that the other side does not have it.

It's a tiny little bump. You will see it.

I must be missing something - try as I might, I can't find a thread dedicated to interiors
I'd appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction - thanks.

I would guess it was a ambient light sensor to dim the Nav screen at night etc.

From the photo, it looks a bit small to be a light sensor and it doesn't look like a lens.
Could be a defect in the production mould; a close-up photo might help.

Cannot be a defect. It is there for a reason. I checked REALOEM and the plastic surround and the screen are all one piece. You can see the bump on the illustration they have as well. My best guess is a light sensor for dimming at night.

It is a light sensor.

Agreed. Think it's a light sensor that tells the NAV screen how bright/dim to go.

My F10´s has it too. And it bothers me a lot! ahahahah This should be some sensor, because i don´t think BMW could leave a residual plastic like this pass unnoticed.

Agreed that it isn't an imperfection caused by manufacturing. Plastic injection molding is too good these days and all injection points in the casting are designed to be on the non-visible side.

My guess; I think it's a datum point for measuring the correct install of the nav screen. i've seen things like this used by robotic measurement tools before. Just a thought anyway..

At least it wont stick out like a Chapel Hat Peg when it's cold..

How about sticking your finger over it? If anything happens to the screen brightness it's a light sensor; if nothing happens it's something else. If you think it's a microphone try shouting at it, but probably best to check nobody's watching before you do so

It is the nozzle for dispensing heated screen cleaner fluid to wash the Nav screen. Go to IDrive and select "Wash Nav screen on 1st and 15th" and you will see the sparkling results twice a month. : Or, is it a spy camera?
