Have you had your turbos replaced (550i / N63)?

As of lately, I've been noticing blue smoke from my exhaust more often. Sometimes after a couple minutes of idling, stop and go, or when I go WOT from 1st to 2nd gear.

I dropped off my car today at BMW for oil leaks. Valve cover gaskets and upper oil pan seal are being replaced. Thank god it's being paid for by Route 66. It's a $3,500 bill and I'm having to pay the diagnostic fee and sales tax ($400).

Anyway I told them about the smoke from the exhaust and they said they would have to inspect the turbos and that they would charge me $1,300 to inspect them.
I told them to at least buy me dinner if they were going to **** me! (kidding)

Route 66 said they would cover the repair but not the inspection/diagnostic charge. I told them I'm going to go to another shop to get them inspected, the rep agreed and said "they're really trying to milk you" lol.

So anyone had their turbos replaced?
If so, did you have blue smoke coming from you exhaust?

BTW, I'm at 66k miles.

I had my turbo replaced on my 535i due to an oil leak. I never saw any smoke. It was replaced under the CPO warranty for the $50 deductible.

Please clarify; in addition to the 4 year / 50k mile factory warranty, the N63 turbos are covered for 70k miles?

Confused.

Thanks.

$2,400. It covers for 5 years or 100k miles, whichever I hit first.
Go through PenFed, I had to make a free checking account with them to become a member. I don't ever use the account though.

They have been great so far.

Straight forward from the beginning what they do pay for and what they don't. (Diagnostic fee, sales tax, shop supplies are not paid by them)

Got my car back today and was told the blue smoke is most likely from me having catless down pipes.
I know catless downpipes will cause some smoke but I thought it was too much lately. Maybe I'm being paranoid, I'm going to leave it alone for now and if it gets worse I will have the turbos inspected by an Indy shop.

Blue smoke is caused by burning of oil in your combustion chamber. It commonly comes from leakage of oil into the cylinders. Check your piston rings or turbo seals as it is the most likely scenario. My 550 had blue smoke and they tried to say it's normal. I had to ask them 2 times and waste them a lot of time/money until they finally decide it's the turbos and all tubings/seals had to be replaced. Now I no longer have blue smoke. Just FYI.

Need to learn about these things instead of relying on the mechanics to be truthful.

White smoke = most likely water vapor
Blue smoke = oil burning in cylinder or exhaust(from turbo)
Black smoke = bad fuel mixture due to incomplete combustion because of suboptimal air/fuel mixture.

What was the mileage on your 550 when they replaced the turbos? And was it under warranty ?

Thanks for the info! I'm going to take it to an Indy shop when I get the chance and have them inspect it. If the seals are going bad I'll have my warranty cover it.

Mine have been fine so far at 42k miles. 75k-ish is what I've heard the life on them is. I'm talking to a Route 66 rep today to get my car covered. I still have until November for factory coverage but doubt waiting a few months will make any difference in price. I too was quoted about $2400 for 60 mos/up to 100k miles. Good enough deal for me.

You probably want to put your stock downpipe back first before you do any warranty claim. Don't take the chance of them giving you the run around and create more problems in the future.
