Finding Limits of N63 stock turbos....
The n63tu platform has proven to be a real underdog since we are seeing more and more 550i's with nearly M5 performance figures. Most are running Pure or Alpina turbos, so we set out to find the limits of what stock 2256s are capable of. Surprisingly, those two little turbos are capable of quite a lot. We started at 15psi, then to 17psi, followed by 20, 22 and finally 24.5psi. Yes the stock turbos were able to achieve nearly 25psi at reline. There is still some more room to go, and maybe 26psi is possible since WGDC was only at 57%, but we did start to feel the turbos approaching the choke point. Once these turbos FINALLY go and we find the breaking point (Most likely 25/26psi), we have our stage 1 set ready for a next challenge.
Here is the datalog pulled from the car on the way to the office. Car is running 100% e85, no 91, 50/50 meth-water, stock downpipes, stock intakes, stock fuel system. The HP figure is estimation for sure, but at 930kg/h per bank, the crank hp can be estimated at 690-710. Next week we will be strapping the car on the dyno and we will see what happens, but the numbers should be around 600whp. To put things in simple terms, engine is a pump. The more air it consumes, the more power it makes. As a reference, stock F10 M5 makes peak HP consuming around 1600kg/h white this 550i is doing ~1850kg/h. Thats 15% increase. Not too bad for those little turbos. One HUGE upgrade for N63 platform would be custom compressor housing and M5 intercoolers. Stock N63 charge pipe/housing output diameter is 40mm VS 52mm found on the M5. http://www.datazap.me/u/missiontunin...3-6-9-10-11-14 |

I looked up the N63 and N63tu turbos and they both are Garret MGT2256 turbochargers with the TU having 9 compressor blades of equal size as opposed to the n63 non tu's double blades, 5 large and 5 small.
Thats crazy how the tu units are moving so much more air than the non tu units. I'm sure us non tu'ers can swap to the tu turbos. Are the M5 intercoolers and charge pipe/housing interchangeable with the N63/N63tu units? |

how are you running 100% E85 ? Is it just in the tune as well or does it need a sensor or what ?
Also why still on stock downpipes ? I would love to see you guys tune a TU with the new coming BMS intakes, some DPs, Alpina intercoolers.

I don't think it would be a direct swap from non-tu n63 to n63tu turbos since they don't have diverter valves on the turbo. Is it possible just to swap the center cartridge between the 2 into a non tu compressor cover? More less for the diverter valve usage? |

Hit me up once you develop a tune so I can blow my motor after the CPO warranty expires
Then I'll do the same to my 650i
