Little snow tractor
We had a nice little snow storm overnight in the northeast. Got about 6-8 inches in Southwestern CT and I had to head out to work early this morning. Decided to keep the 550 at home. Not worried about its all weather capabilities, I just didn't want some idiot plowing into my brand new car. This left me with the 528 which proved to be a rock star. Of course the Merritt Parkway (one of our major parkways) was unplowed, but that proved no problem for the x-drive. Actually felt more comfortable in the snow then I previously did in my Audi. There was a little slip and slide here and there, but overall the drive was as uneventful as I could have hoped for.
Anyone else enjoying their x-drive on this snowy day?

Drove the car last night and the X drive really kicks ass and take names!
I pulled a few hard turns to check the limits of the systems and surprisingly it is extremely predictable. The computers kick in just enough to correct any major slippage with enough to let you do as you like. (tail whips). I felt very confident with the beast. I have a 2014 jeep grand Cherokee Hemi and honestly nothing compares to its all around off road ability. The 550xi comes decently close. Cheers! |

Driveway still unplowed - the joy of working from home. But I WAS a bit curious to see how the 550xi would fare in the deeper snow... next time. Just couldn't bring myself to take an hour or two to snow-blow it today in this completely freezing weather we're getting!

Are you all using snow, all-season or summer tires......just asking. I have summer tires(Bridgestone,Potenza's). I can't take the chance in snow. 2011 535xi. Been thinking bout snow tires for the last 3 years...LOL

I felt confident in my 550i rwd in 4 inches of unplowed snow. I had nokian dedicated snow tires and with bmw traction on, It was pretty good. All rwd needs is a dedicated set of snows. Blizzak are amazing as well.

You shouldn't need snow tires with xDrive unless you're planning on going through some very rough conditions. In fact, for more than a decade I've driven RWD 3-series cars with all season tires and lived in the north east... never used snow tires on them. They were perfectly fine. Sure, you'd hit the road here and there that was a bit harder to navigate, but as long as you know how to handle the car, you're typically OK. You're just not going to do any steep inclines for sure in a RWD with A/S.

Bmrmeup - absolutely, you can't drive summer tires below around 40 degrees since they lose grip in those temps (even on dry pavement)... no less don't have a tread pattern capable of clearing snow.

Of course it'd be better with snow tires, and an xdrive doesn't brake better than a RWD.
