Need help guys
I have a 2012 F10 with 16k miles on it. It has the N20 engine. During cold starts the car shakes a bit (specially when the rpm is above 1k and then the car idles down to just below 1k). There is no fluctuation in the RPM but u can feel a very slight vibration every 10-15 seconds (like while stopped at the traffic light). The RPM needle remains constant though. Yesterday I started hearing a soft thumping sound from the outside when I was walking around the car at idle.
Any ideas what could be causing it? There are no fault codes in the idrive or when connected to the bmw diagnostic software (Rheinhold)...one thing that I did notice was that out of the 4 cylinders, cylinder 1 was showing a reading of 6-8v while the others were below 5, one of the cylinders was as Low as 2v. I'm not sure what these readings mean but that's what was displayed on the computer. Could it be spark plugs, injector, ignition coil? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! P.S car is completely stock |

How cold? If I leave my car (N20) parked outside in 15-20 degree (F) for the day, the engine vibrates very noticeably until it warms up, especially when idiling at a light.

I don't much about the N20 problem but see how your car is super lows miles (and depending on the year) just take it to the dealer and have them check it out.

I live near the equator so the temp here is never below 80F, got the car in May 2012 and it's beyond its original 3 year warranty so avoiding the dealer as they tend to state everything as "Normal".

With such low mileage I would think more along the lines of a partially clogged injector.
The minute gasoline is made it starts to deteriorate, if you are averaging only 3k miles a year the gas is breaking down just sitting in your tank, hopefully you are in an area where ethanol is not used . I would start with an additive called Techron it's made by Chevron If you cannot find that any Yamaha marine dealer should have a product called "Ring Free" for sale, it's the same thing just highly concentrated. Your problem doesn't sound that severe and should clear up within a hundred miles or so. |

Thanks guys! Taking it to a workshop today and let's see what they find. Going to get the battery replaced too, been 5 years and still hasn't shown a Low battery message...although the diagnostic tool did show battery related errors

Okay so I did go to a well known workshop in my city yesterday. Got the battery replaced as the old one was almost on its way out.
They connected my car to the diagnostic software and went through various readings and could not find anything wrong. They changed all the spark plugs in case that was the problem. Drove back home and the car drives great( which it did even earlier)...parked the car and let it idle a bit...the slight shaking is still there and can hear a thumping sound from the engine...seems to be coming from the left side. Tried to switch off my ac so that the radiator fan turns off and I can hear the sound better...when I pressed the ac button off...nothing happened...as in the ac button light went off but cold air was still coming in and the RPM did not drop...then about 30 seconds later the rpm suddenly dropped( to the level it should be with the ac off) after the car abrupruptly shook. Really confused at this point. |
