BMS air filter imploded?? Check it out
Anyone ever seen this before? I just opened my hood and noticed that my intake looks like it has imploded as if under extreme negative pressure. It is caved in 360° around the filter at the middle.
The filter is only like a month old and I don't have any mods other than JB4 (stage 5). Wtf??

Lol. How could the structural integrity of a conical air filter possibly be compromised during install? It is a bolt on for Christ's sake.

i've seen it collapse during installs when someone pressed hard from the top of filter. im just giving my guess on what i've seen before happen, could have also been a manufacturing fault.

That thought had crossed my mind but it's not really possible with the support bracket properly in place (see red circle below). There is also no rubbing or scratches on the underside of the hood.

it looks like poop but won't effect air flow, how long ago you go the filter ? maybe BMS can replace it or give you a big discount on a new one.

I don' think an N55 can pull enough air to crush a huge filter like that. Definitely some sort of physical damage, like bent in during install or hit the hood. They have new filters on their site with the intake tubes if you need.

I would think it was more likely from shipping.

Defintely not normal. Reach out to BMS. Like you said with the support screw it doesn't really move at all. I actually had mine come off and for a few months I dind't notice the filter had no support... zero issues. I highly doubt the filter is hitting something, or got crushed, etc.
See what BMS says? They're usually great at customer support, I'm sure they can work something out with you. Like others said, it shouldn't affect performance, just looks like crap.

How close is the bottom of the filter to the bottom of the intake box?
The bracket only secures the intake via a single axis. If you loosen the clamp where the BMS intake meets the OEM elbow, or even if you don't loosen it, you will find that you can actually rotate the entire BMS intake assembly so that the filter sits higher/lower. Also that doesn't look like the hood was rubbing against it, my guess is that the intake might have been sitting at an odd angle, then the hood was closed on it to create that kink, hence no chafing marks. OR I could just be completely wrong lol |

How does K&N benefit? I mean it is an open intake when the hood is open, but with hood closed it is still closed in the square with round filter versus the square style. With hood closed, air still comes through same OEM pipe. Is the bottom open on K&N box/shield?

The K&N is much more porous than OEM. The upside is that it passes a lot more air, the downside is that it passes a lot more dirt. There are those who claim that the extra dirt will lead to additional motor wear on a long term basis. If you do some searching on the web, you can find the documentation and make your own decision.
Good luck. |
