F10 550i to M5 Grills

Has anyone put the M5 kidney grills on their 550i? Do they just pop in and out like my 2011 BMW 335i or do you have to remove trim items under the hood?

Garage List
When I had done mine, I followed the procedure posted on here. I was unable to get them off.

I had also read that when the engine is hot, you can just pull them off. I gave that a try and it worked like a charm. Saves having to remove any screws or mouldings. All you do is grab the slats and each side and pull / torque the grills. Dont be gentle and dont worry about breaking anything. They will pop out.

That's what I was thinking. I didn't see any reason to take off any hardware or screws when all you had to do was pull them off. That's how I took the ones off my 2011 335i. They just popped in and out. Thanks for the advice.

It took me about 20 seconds per side to replace the 535i style (chrome surround w/chrome faced slats) on my "Black Sapphire Metallic" vehicle with the OEM M5 style (chrome surround w/gloss black faced slats). Although I liked the original grills, I found the M5 style more understated in appearance with my dark vehicle color.

Since my vehicle has a full frontal clear bra on all painted surfaces, I was't hesitant to proceed by inserting my fingers in & behind the slats of each grill side applying steady, controlled, thumb pressure on the covered painted surfaces surrounding the grills, starting at the top & working my way around releasing a few clips at a time, thereby removing the grills. Replacement grills just slid into & engaged quite easily. Thank you DIY'ers from this & other forums who preceded me and gave me the courage to attempt this repacement method.

See happy face & one of my thumbs, upturned, below:

Thanks.
