IF things vibrate without moving with the engine on, you might want to get all of your engine mounts checked out. Those, along with the bushings that isolate the steering column are what minimizes vibrations transmitted into the column and steering wheel.

Is it a high frequency vibration, kind of like holding an electric shaver?

If so I've got it, can't get rid of it and no idea what causes it. BMW have been out driving in mine and can't seem to feel what I feel so I don't know if I'm suddenly sensitive to something that was always there or not. I just know 1-er and 3-er courtesy cars feel better. I tried out a 520D which felt very similar but I thought the point of the 30 engine was it's so smooth - and I kind of remember my first year of ownership being like that.

Over the course of last year under warranty I've had engine mounts changed, rear diff mounts changed (sorted a rear balancing type shake out at least), steering column adjusted/repositioned, I got rid of run-flats, played with air pressures, umpteen wheel balancings, had all the various suspension bushings checked, buckled alloy changed (no idea what caused that one). You name it, feels like I gave it a go.

So if you come across the real reason I'd be grateful to know

hi, its exactly how you describe it. Ive had a friend of mine to look at it he's a fitter a bmw first thing he said when sitting in car is they all do its nothing to worry about. He had a 13 reg 520d when he came to mine and said sit in car and try it. Sure enough this one as well suffers from the vibration. I had just bought both mounts and was going to fit them he said don't bother, maybe he's right going off what you say.

funny though ive now conceded that this is a problem with alot of bmws and so put it to the back of my mind.. guess what now I don't feel it

I'd got used to it by October last year after obsessing all summer. Something triggered it again with me a couple of weeks ago so I've got to re-forget it now

On the plus side, ditching my rfts for Goodyear Eagles as part of the investigation was the best move I made, so much grip in the wet.

Had a recent meet with a bmw tech who is well aware of the various f10/11 vibration issues. These vary from steering related to vibrations felt through the seats.
Apparently at this particular dealership they have been replacing some front oil filled bushes for non oil filled bushes from the 7 series with good results. At least I think this is the case unless I have the wrong end of the stick? if I remember correctly from our conversation the whole front axle needs removing making it a pita job.

I'm getting the same thing, even my face is tingling! Only 681 miles from new.
BMW about to get a call from me.

That is bad news. From new... or started happening within a few miles?

I'd try and be very clear with BMW what you are feeling, as there seems to be some differences in how it is manifest.

I'm surprised that some feel high frequency vibrations from tickover/idle and dealer actions include wheel balance and the like. Totally wrong fault finding procedure, if it is there while the vehicle is not in motion.

Define the vibration as best you can to them, when and how it occurs.

Cheers HP.

Fortunately as part of my job I give vendors a bloody Nose when things ain't right, this will be no different. BMW will get a very well written up report from me of how to recreate the issue and what I expect from them.
I did actually feel this when I got the car, but I put it down to it being a new car, after 700 miles, the vibration should have gone down.
If it still occurs and they can't get to the bottom of it, I want my Money back.

Maybe an extra 2 cylinders will cure it

Wow that sounds bad. I hope you and Poolie get a satisfactory resolution to this! Makes me wonder if mine will start doing this in a few hundred miles too....

P.S. I work for a Vendor (albeit in the IT industry rather than the Automotive industry, so am sometimes on the other end of the Bloody nose when our customers / resellers aren't happy!)

At least it is being acknowledged... Out of interest, is it a vibration only induced by motion, or is it possibly from the engine, including at idle?

When car is in motion, it is more prominent at speed above 20mph.

I also experienced a mild tingling at low speeds however, strangely my wife could not feel it.

It was never serious enough that I felt a need to complain and the car goes in a couple of weeks but it's clear from these posts that there is an issue.

So what do you guys think is generating the vibration? Engine induced... changes with load, overrun, on and off the throttle? Any engine rpm when it is worse, (when stationary) and/or changes with different gears, even at a given road speed?

Or is it feeling as if it's from the EPS itself, when touching the wheel on idle, (not in motion). If so, does it change with lightest turning torque?

I'm intrigued... as it is totally foreign to me, no experience in any of the 5-series cars I've driven.

BTW, I see all three users with the issue in this topic are 520d users...
