Unhappy F10 Owners, does your car hesitate or jerk at 0-10 mph??

Hi,

Proud owner here of a 1 week old 535i! Space Gray on Oyster Dakota Leather with the anthracite wood... Premium 1, Premium 2, Convenience Package and Cold Weather Package. I love the suspension, the NAV, the ultra quiet cabin, and the all the little features that make this car so amazing! But there's one problem.

When I test drove it, I drove it like I stole it and red lined it at every chance I got! And it's a great peformer. The problem is, in real world driving I rarely get the chance to do that. Instead, I'm finding that at VERY low speeds, the car has a hard time figuring out what I want.... Idiling along in traffic and then lightly touching the gas either gives no response, or too much of a response as it ramps up and I lurch forward. From a stop it's the worst. Driving through the neighborhood, parking lots, or stopped at a light, I get a very unlinear acceleration response when just slowly moving forward. Yes, the 0-60 is amazing. ... It's that gentle touch of the pedal that keeps my occupant's heads from jerking that I'm not able to attain!

Is anyone else having this problem? Took it to the dealer and the technician who rode with me and also drove it said he got what I was saying and kind of recreated it too, but didn't offer a solution. The shop has not seen any of these cars come through for any reason because it's so new... so I'm looking for any other owners who are also having this problem?! Are any of you experiencing the transmission hunting for the right speed, or the sensation of a jerk as the engine over compensates, or is it me??

Trying to be a smooth operator!! Thanks for your responses.

I don't have the issue on my 550i, but in some forum's somewhere I've heard of some getting some SW update to deal with this or a similar issue. Don't know anything else about it other than the second hand info.

I know what you are talking about The throttle is kinda twitchy or lurchy in 1st to 2nd. I have the ZDH package, I found that it's worse in comfort and better in sport. Worse when it's cold, better or non-existent when warm. I've learned to live with it. It just takes a very delicate right foot. You'll get used to it too. My guess is that the car is trying to rip through the gears as fast as possible in city driving to save fuel.

I think you're probably right, it's flying through those gears... who ever thought there'd be downside to having so many gears? I was secretly hoping it would learn that I like a smooth departure from a stop. I'm glad you know what I'm talking about... thanks!

Thanks for this post. My 528i (does not have sports transmission) has the same type of hesitation and lurch 0-10 mph. Being a first time BMW owner, I did not want to complain about what is a small issue. It is a bit irritating, however. Will be curious to follow the responses.

Interesting...
I'm taking a 530d auto out for an hour or so on Wednesday; I'll make a point of checking on this issue and let you know.

Hey...

I have a 2011 535i and it started doing that lurch for me the day after I picked it up. Took it in to the dealer and they solved it by replacing the 'mechatronics'. My car's back at the dealer now (they forgot to re-initialise the comfort access) but when it comes back tomorrow, I'll put up a copy of the repair sheet. It feels like a hiccup and is something you should DEFINITELY take it in for. They'll fix it.

I found at least one reference, in passing, in this thread/forum:

http://forums.5series.net/topic/9728...s/page__st__30

Page 3 I think, someone asked what it was about, haven't seen a response. Might be worth a PM.

Also, if the dealer's tech isn't able to solve it, feel free to have the shop foreman have a look. They'll escalate to BMW NA. I got the same "oh, we see the problem but we don't know what to do because we haven't had any of these puppies in for service/repairs yet" response. But they were really nice to get someone from BMW NA on the horn who flew a chap out to troubleshoot it. Took a few days for the part to arrive, but now it's smooth as a baby's butt when starting from a stop.

There *IS* a fix and you should get it.

I have exactly the same thing happening...it is not you...try to get it to rev to 1000 rpm when in park. It is difficult to do. It wants to over or under shoot. you have to be real steady and slow on the accelerator to do this. It is hesitation on start up. i am going to dealer on Wed for same problem...good luck with them admitting it is a problem. Makes it difficult to do slow start without jerk.

Is anyone with a 520d auto having this problem? Sounds like it mainly affects the petrol (gasoline) engined cars from reading the posts.

Me too

I have the same issue with my 2011 750xi.

See this thread.

http://www.7post.com/forums/showthre...t=transmission

I am ordering a 535xi. When I test drove one, no problems. Now I am somewhat concerned. I am pleased to see in this thread that there may be a fix out there.

I'm very curious to see what the repair sheet says. Also did you have it serviced at BMW SanMo?

Wow,

That's a breakthrough! I have a feeling you've been the test study for what alot of us are going to bring our cars in for soon!! Keep us posted as to what the repair sheet says...I'll look forward to the wording! Smooth as a baby's butt? Can't wait.

I really want to see how many other people have had this problem!

No... Bought it and keep getting it fixed at McKenna BMW. They've been nice to give me loaners for free (BMW SaMo wants me to pay for loaners) and they even flat bed it back and forth- for free!

Repair sheet coming right as I get her back.

I've noticed the same issue on my F10 535i, but thought this was "normal." Please do share the repair sheet for the fix, since I am anxious to ask my dealer about this issue.

Hopefully this may save you from getting a new car.... You're thread sounds exactly like the same problem!

Yeah, but I am going back to the 5 anyway. The 7 is great, but too big for my taste. I also think the straight six is a much better engine than the V8. The V8 is like a freight train once you get it going, but it takes longer to get going. The torquey straight six is much better IMHO. The 6 really is the perfect engine.
