The odds say that you would KILL yourself if you had the opportunity to drive any of my toys.
So, telling to ditch the AWD if I'm REALLY into driving is laughable at best.

I want my sedan to have AWD and a DCT.
If the 550xi doesn't get the best drivetrain available, I'll buy a Panamera or the next RS4/S4.

Listen guys,

If the 550i was to be offered with a DCT it would have been mentioned in the outlining spec PDF available at it's launch. The normal 5 series doesn't need DCT and it's highly questionable where it will be offered with the new M5.

It seem remarkable that anyone would dismiss the ZF 8sp out of hand without actually trying it because after sampling one I was more than impressed and this is coming from someone with quite a bit of DCT experience.

I agree. This guy sounds like a your typical (I'm into photography) photographer who isn't REALLY into photography but goes to costco and gets the "BEST" (gotta love that word) dSLR kit he can buy complete with all the bells, whistles, accessories thinking it'll make him a great photographer. Then he chucks it on ebay 2 weeks later and moves onto a new "hobby." Truth is great photography has little-to-nothing to do with your camera. Gotta love people who NEED the "BEST" and want the "BEST" and have no real knowledge on anything. Please, people. Genuinely like something, learn about it instead of demanding "THE BEST" and talking about things you know nothing about. BMW is making these cars--not you. I think they have a better idea on what the "BEST" is.

Also, you can't talk about an enthusiast's wants and needs if you are talking about the xi version of the car, you have already taken a step back, many enthusiasts who want every bit of performance will opt for RWD and snow tires and would view the xi as a step back more than what type of "automatic" trans the car comes with.

I've driven a 545i for a few weeks with the standard automatic and boy was I impressed. Same for the 335i auto.
Super fast shifting and extremely comfortable and smooth.

I've never driven a DCT but I know I wouldn't like it. I'd feel like im playing gran turismo. I want to have a sense of the gears changing. If it's not a manual (the favorite option) an automatic (standard torque converter one) would be my next choice

Well for that to happen the new 5 series will have to ride much better than the 5GT, but if it gets this right then I have no doubt BMW will be back to the old days of the E39 when it truly was the car to beat.

The 5 GT is more like the 7. Depending on what trim of the car also varies the ride greatly (5 GT).

You say that as if it's a bad thing. I'm glad BMW is returning to its roots and reorienting the cockpit to face the driver.

The expected responses considering that this is a BMW forum.

I'll wait to see what the new M5 looks like vs. the current E63...as well as the performance. The W212 E63 is gorgeous, inside and out (especially in Obsidian with the full carbon fiber).

I personally prefer the look of the new F10, but have not driven it obviously. I will say that I would take the current E class over any E60 5series. We almost bought a '10 E350 4matic over a '10 535xi....but ended up deciding on an X5 instead. BMW wins out in handling as usual, but for total package the E is a great option.

Here's hoping that the F10 M5 outperforms the W212 E63 inside and out. I love the M5...and have my heart set on one, but as you can see from my garage, I could really give a rat's ass about the badge and am more concerned with the all around package.

Well spoken! A lot of us here love Daimler Benz AG as well but it's obvious that we lean towards BMW here. I've owned two W126 sedans and I still plan to one day pick up a 560 SEC as a classic boulevard cruiser for the future. I would say Mercedes and BMW compete against each other well and in a gentlemanly fashion - they one up each other and continuously improve through competition. I don't think Audi or VAG really hold a candle. I've also owned two Lexus' and they have their place as extremely reliable well built cars, also. If it wasn't for competition from Lexus, Mercedes-Benz would've still been a highly exclusive and very expensive marque in the U.S.

I know the wheelbase is based on the 7 series though the difference between both these and the 5 is very small. But my point was that the front suspension is basically the same with a few minor tweaks, oh and trim I am discussing is the S/E.

I'm not a fan of run-flats though clearly BMW are and I know how much increasing the alloy size effects so I suppose I am expecting the new 5 series S/E with 19" to ride as well as the E-class on similar rubber, or even the XF on 20", anything worse will greatly effect it's appeal.

If you're impressed by the 6AT in the 545i then you'll shit your pants if you drive the new ZF 8HP.

The 6spd in the 545i is incredibly dated. I hate how much the torque converter interferes in our 645ci. It's like it never locks up at a reasonable RPM.

+1, I really like the 5 series rear, side and interior, not a big fan of the front.

The wheels on both cars look dated already.
