What's up with BMW and the ride height?
Seems like all new BMW's have a ride height of darn off-road 4x4's - I had a few 3's and 5's and M's over the years and it seems to have started with the E60's especially the E60 M5.
I have a neighbor that just took delivery of a new A6 - although it's a Quattro, it looked cool with almost being flush to the wheels... These days, the first mod I had to do on my 550 were ACS springs - I'm getting a new M5 and just seeing the pics, i will have to drop it as well...and this does not seem like a US only nuance (like numerous crud in the past) - seems across the board. I looked at pics of my E39 M5 from 11 years ago and that was one sweet car - probably the second best car I've ever owned (after my 997 Turbo) and it did not need an after-market drop!

Many many people here complain the old ones are way to low.
They scrape over speedbumps, scrape going into and out of parking lots or driveways, scrape the nose when you hit potholes ect ect You must be glad you have nice and flat places to drive a low car.

My last 3 cars have been m-sport with lower & stiffer suspension. The roads I travel on just don't suit that at all (and neither does my lower back) in terms of both comfort and scraping, enough that I've recently been considering a 4x4. Thankfully the SE spec suspension gives me the comfort my back needs, and the extra height means I've scraped nothing (so far!!) Low stiff suspension might suit race tracks but in normal day-to-day driving it's not a great combination. |

I want a car I can use... If I couldn't take my F11 up to the mountains here in Norway on gravel roads etc, I sure wouldn't buy it! This is the general trend, people want cars they can use. Even Ferrari makes the cars more usable now.
And with the EDC the car drives really well when I feel like having fun in day to day driving Last edited by LiveLarger; 04-15-2012 at 05:42 AM.. |

In my opinion they are too high from factory. My new Msport looked like a 4x4 until I put springs on..

I have no problems with it. It's what you need to have dynamic ride control. When you lower the car, you are losing ride quality and dynamic range. The genius of this system is that it has both firm and soft settings, and doesn't hit have problems clearing speed bumps.
I might lower half an inch, but no more than that.

I find the ride height to be perfect for my tastes. I have an X drive but it is slightly lowered with DHP. I live in New England and a "low rider" would be a snow plow during a snow storm. Cars like that spend the winter indoors up here. I also don't wear my baseball cap backwards, have pants that are falling down, or have my car fitted with bouncing springs that I can actuate on command when I want to make an impressive entrance when I pull up to a gourmet restaurant.
The BMW 535 is a classy car, let it stay that way! When it hits the used car market in five or ten years then they can customize it for low rider styling. |

They should leave no sport models and X models with that tractor height, but when you buy a sport or Msport, it should be lower. damn shame |

I've already scraped my M package front bumper twice so, no thank you. It's low enough as it is. I think VDC also had something to do with it, as I think the suspension lowers the car bit more with the VDC dampening.

Agree with most here. BMW's stance is not what is used to be. I had an e90 Sport, and the stance was perfect. I had no desire to lower the e90, since it sits and ride nicely. My F10 definitely has a huge wheel gap and Lexus like ride, which I do not like.

I agree that the stock height is too high, so I lowered the height leaving about one finger diameter space between tires and body with kw3 coilover + 21inch rims. It looks much better and ride is surprisingly comfortable....
