Can't Back Up With Door Open

I just washed my car and was backing into the garage to vacuum the inside, I just needed to go back a little further so the cord on the vacuum would reach, so I got back in, started it up, I had one foot outside the door and my other foot on the brake, I pushed the button on the side of the shifter and pushed it forward into reverse. I lifted my foot off the brake and prepared to move backward. I moved a couple of feet and it stopped abruptly and I heard a chime (which I thought was telling me that the door was ajar), and I noticed the shifter was in park. So I tried it again, but this time the car didn't move back - just an inch or so from the drive line play (in and out of gear). I did it a couple of more times and the same thing happened - this time I read the nav screen and it told me to secure the car against rolling. This time I closed the door and it worked fine.

I tell you this car is too smart for its own good.

I find this an irritating feature too. Sometimes you want to open the door like when backing up in the garage or just open the door to say something to the kids when you leave then PLING!! and the car just stops.

I guess there are more dumb people inadvertendly driving with their door open than people like us who want to back up with the door open for a reason, hence the precaution.

Actually, there is a potential recall on 7 series cars (e65/e66) for the car rolling after start/stop depressed.

What I don't get is, how are you supposed to shove the carjacker out of the driver's seat while the car is moving?

There is a way to do move the car with the door open. You can only creep the car by having your foot on the brake pedal the whole time. The car automatically goes on park the second you take your foot off the brake.

This wont work if you're trying to back up on an upward incline.

You got that right. In the UK Some 'Z' list pop star plank did just that a few years ago in his Merc, managed to fall out and get run over by his own car! I suspect BMW are celebrity proofing their cars..

Of course with a proper gearbox its no problem backing up with the door open!

BMW is concerned that you'll fall out of the car. Must be more of that going around then we're aware. I was at my dealership last year and there was a BMW parked outside the bodyshop without a door. The owner backed up with the door open and snagged a pole. I would just put on your seat belt.

It seems that BMW is trying to idiotproof their cars to limit their liability. Hey, if you back up with the door open and you hit a wall or other obstruction it's your fault. BMW does have door open warnings like chimes and notices so their butts are covered. The guy in the Merc who fell out of his car and got run over probably didn't have his seatbelt on - the seatbelts are there, he made the conscious choice not to put it on.

People have to start taking responsibility for their own actions again and stop blaming others when they are clearly at fault.
