F10 5-series Manual Transmission Take Rate Only 6%. What's yours?

EDIT:
As of 9/7/10 38.21% of F10 owners here have indicated that they have chosen manual transmission

According to Insideline, the take rate for manual transmission on the F10 5-series is only 6 percent of all orders so far, signaling an overwhelming preference by F10 owners for the automatic transmission.

So what does this signal for the upcoming F10 M5? Will we see a manual transmission option? If so, will the percentage of manual transmission M5's also be this low?

We're curious how many of our members have the manual transmission versus the auto transmission. Would be interesting to see if our stats match the 6% cited above. Please vote in the associated poll.

I had been told that prior to the F10 that only 5% of all BMW's sold in the US had manuals, so 6% is and increase.

The percentage of people with 6MT on this forum will be *way* different than the general population of F10 owners. I haven't seen a 6MT F10 other than mine yet. There are some 6MT E60s in my parking lot at work though.

Oh, and the 6MT in my 535i is really smooth! Both shifting and clutch action.

When I order my F10, it will be a 535i with the manual transmission....you know, 'cuz I'm a control freak. Further, NO automatic transmission offers the level of control of a manual. I don't give a rat's azz about shift times or number of gears or efficiency or anything else. I like the DIRECT connection the manual transmission offers. It's linear, predictable, and does exactly what I make it do - errors and all. That's half the fun of driving...being CONNECTED to my machine.

Manual will need to be offered in the F10 M5. This is a main reason that BMW has the edge over Mercedes: offering a manual gearbox.

Even though the % take-rate is low, the availability of a M/T still advances the "sport" image of the car. Plus there are at least 6% who really love it! It's one of the options that sets BMW above the others!!

...I gotta say, in the last year, I have only seen 2, E60 M5's and maybe 10 other various E60 models, with a full manual transmission. Albeit That's only 1 shop in all of FL though. I hate to say it, but I think the majority of BMW's purchasing market, would rather not drive the car, the way they need to be driven. (sometimes, at least, lol) They want the cool factor, w/o the effort needed for the drive. The SMG is the bane of my existence, funny.... I thought it was fantastic when they first unveiled it.

I have heard that the clutch pack costs around 5k euros in the M5 SMG when it craps out! I will always row my own gears - thank you! But I can see why people choose a DCT/auto for these luxo cars.

I like the control of the manual windows .

i am getting a 550xi Msport with the new sport tranny and paddles. my friends who swear by manual tried my 335xi with sport auto and were sold.

the sport paddles give me all the control i need, were not talking about your fathers automatic transmission. if you want to drive in second gear you can do that too.

6% isn't surprising, but I'm not sure why they don't offer on xDrive models. I was shocked to hear last week from the dealership that so far no manuals planned for any of the xDrive 5's. C'mon BMW, why rain on my parade??? I love the new 5, but the lack of manual is making me wonder if it's going to be another xDrive 3er for me, manual of course unless they change their mind on that.

I don't have my F 10 yet.I'll be ordering within a few days.I'll be going automatic for several reasons...mainly because life is too short for MTs.I know that many "purists" strongly disagree with that,but....

Also, the 8 speed gets better mileage which,IIRC,is common with recent automatics.

I love manual and i dont think ill ever go for auto. As long as my car is a 3 series or smaller. My buddy got his f10 couple weeks ago and there is no way I would have manual in that boat. No Way!
Auto for sure.

I want the F10, I really do. But I need xDrive (live in MI and need to get to work when there's a foot of snow on the ground). And I really, REALLY don't want the auto trans. Personal preference. I totally understand from a business standpoint why BMW limited the 6MT availability on the F10 compared to the E60, but that doesn't mean I'm not disappointed. Obviously it's a small fraction of buyers looking for 6MT, and probably an even smaller fraction looking for 6MT + xDrive. Looks like it will be another 3 series for me. Hate to buy in one of the last model years (another reason I really wanted the F10), but also don't want to wait for F30... knowing they might not offer 6MT + xDrive on that either.

Enthusiasts are much more likely to have a manual transmission then the average consumer. I am not surprised to see such a high percentage compared to the general population.

I'll drive a manual until my body says I no longer can...

Is it just a US epidemic? Typical lazy americans? I would venture to guess that in other countries, where auto might come at a very premium price, that manuals are more prevalent...

AGREED! Thank you for that, sir! Couldn't have said it better myself...

Its quite the opposite. In most Asian countries manual is not even an option on the F10.

Someday those hanging on to their olden and golden ways will have to let go of their beloved clutch pedal. I predict that day will will be in less than 10years.

There's a lot more to control than just WHEN it shifts, are you actually being serious? For example when I would corner hard in my 328i, which had the non sport 205s all around, and needed to grab another gear mid corner (either 2nd or another gear during a really long turn) I would break my back end loose if I did it quickly but if I slip the clutch for an extremely brief moment to smooth the engagement I would have no issues with traction.

This is pointless in my 135i, however, because of the ridiculous amount of torque at any engine speed

There's also the issue of launching, there are few cars out there with a "launch control" function that does anything more than a spectacular burnout, I got good enough launching my 328i to actually out launch my buddy's B7 S4 when he would dump the clutch, I could hold off auto 335s until 3rd gear when I was stock because of the launch.

With all that said, if I were getting an F10 I'd probably get the auto, it's not like I'd be planning on racing it. An M5 would be a different story, manual for sure on that one for me.

How could I say it....driving a barge like a 5er has to be automatic. It's like an SUV...it has to be automatic. In smaller cars I prefer manual.

I think I would go auto/DCT on the F10, even the M5.
