AMS Comparison: BMW F10 525d vs Jaguar XF 3.0D
BIMMERPOST NEWS AMS Comparison: BMW F10 525d vs Jaguar XF 3.0D German AMS has published an interesting article comparing the BMW 525d sedan with the Jaguar XF 3.0 V6 D. Unlike the name suggests, the 525d is powered by BMW's N57 3.0l inline-6 Diesel engine, yet with a lower output of 204hp and 450 NM (530d: 258hp). It's quite popular in Europe because it's the entry level inline-6 Diesel. The car tested was matched with the optional 8-speed automatic. Just like the name suggests, the Jaguar XF 3.0 V6 D is powered by a 275ph 3.0l V6 Diesel engine. The test car was equipped with a six-speed automatic which AMS considers a good match despite lacking the refinement of BMW's automatic. The verdicts: The BMW 525d scored 530 points (out of 650) and wins this comparison. The 525d wins for having "more space and better safety features, not for its better performance. The BMW consumes less despite being quicker." Downsides according to AMS are the lack of standard equipment and the options being too expensive. The Jaguar XF finishes second in scoring 496 points. "Its V6 Diesel shows a level of refinement even petrol heads might consider. The XF provides both a comfortable ride and a good handling. Less space, fewer safety features and higher costs make for 2nd place though." Visit Auto Motor Sport for more pictures and the whole comparison (German). |

I'm all about BMWs but that jag is one gorgeous car! I'm happy to hear that it lost because of less space and higher price rather than lack of performance. The jag just has more personality IMO

At risk of being banned from this forum for life and never being able to get my new F11 serviced by a dealer ever again... I think I would've opted for the Jag if I didn't need an estate car.
I tend to agree with some other people with regard to the vague steering at centre and the slightly unconvincing standard ride. Having to fork out thousands of pounds on extras to remedy these issues and then even more cash to get sat nav doesn't go down well with me. I love my F11 (and my 3 series before it) but I always look at passing XFs and think "that's nice..." |

I don't get it, why was the Jag not compared with the 530d?
A friend of mine owns an XF 2,7d. Although a lovely car, build quality drives him crazy, the auto tranny broke down several times. Besides, residual value is still poor.

As things stand now, I am unable to get that Q5 out of my mind. Its just oh so gorgeous! But I decided to keep the RAV4 in the stable one or max two years see what is available then.

The Jag's exterior and interior design is pretty good, but... What kind of idiot designed that rotary transmission "shifter"??? Why does it "retracts" itself when not in use? It takes very, very little space in "up" position and is hardly noticeable, so why waste $$$ on extra parts to make it retractable? Not to mention that if electric motor fails to "raise" it, you won't be able to even shift out of "P" and move/drive your car (unless there's some kind of "emergency" way to manually "raise" it)

Big cars with small motors are not my style. OK, gas does not cost $8 per gallon in the US.

What I don't understand is how the jag with 75bhp and about the same weight is slower than the bmw.
Either jag are telling lies about the power output or their transmission is rubbish.
