Proper procedure when I worked at the dealer was to bill out a new sensor to the RO, but in some cases the sensor lense comes attached to the new glass and just the sensor body can be changed over.

I've replaced a few windshields (Safelite) on my E60 without any issues with the rain sensor. You just need to make sure that they use the right glass.

I've had 2 windshields replaced on my F10 in the past 2 years, done at a BMW certified collision centre and covered by insurance, both times they ordered new rain sensors. Not saying it is necessary, but seems to be the norm.

The rain sensor is often replaced when the windshield is replaced. If I remember correctly, initially the glass shop told me I was going to need a new sensor when I had my windshield replaced because BMW didn't sell the gasket/sealer without the sensor. They did end up finding a gasket from a third party and they reused the rain sensor. No issues in the 4 years since.
