buying 550i vs 535 vs 528??
Looking to get back into a BMW. My last one was a 2007 335i coupe and enjoyed the car despite the fuel pump issue.
Now Im looking into a 4series GC or 5 series with M sport. Im pretty open to any model.. which one would be more reliable of the 3? any issues with the 535i?? is the fuel pump issue fixed?? |

@jaxxx , so far all of the 3 are pretty reliable. But if I were you, I will go with 535.

if anything from being on the 5 series forum all the time i notice guys will mention more about the 550i issues than the 535. for me since i have a 535 the only issue i had was just the Vanos Bolt recall. never had a fuel pump issue. i think it's going to come down to what plans do you have for the car? if you're looking into performance and power the 550 will have more power over the 535. daily driver?? my 535 is great! tho i wish i could get more power at least i know i have the options to upgrade to the PureTurbo 2 upgrade or even a tune. it's all up to your needs really.
if you notice down a few post someone already posted another 550i recall

If you want to buy and keep for a long time, then it most likely makes sense to stay away from the 550i. However, none of these cars is truly designed for long-term high-mileage durability. If nothing else, carbon build-up will get you at some point. You need to look at Lexus or similar if reliability is a critical consideration.

Make sure the 550 has had the CCP recall done and since your getting it CPOd you shouldn't run into any issues. Try to get the 2014+ 550 with the n63tu motor instead of the n63 as its a bit more reliable. |

If you decide 550, just make sure it is 2014+ with the newer engine design. Early 550's with the N63 power plant were much more troublesome than the N63Tu variant. The 535 features BMW's award winning N55 power plant. As you know BMW is known for manufacturing the smoothest inline 6 engines in the industry. For me personally, the 535 suited my needs best. With the M Performance exhaust, BMS intake, and a Stage 1 Tune, the car has enough grunt for my daily driving needs. I live in the NY metro area and don't get much opportunity to really open the car up. I have had my share of speeding tickets in my younger days, so I find the 340ish hp to satisfy my needs in a DD.

I have a 2014 550i and I love it. 11k miles so far and no issues at all with the car. The extra power is something you will enjoy, trust me!

As for the engine choice: I have no issues with the power of my 528i but I am mostly dealing with city traffic and congested Florida highways. If you are even considering a 550i, then a 528i may be too much of a compromise.

Think about what is important for you.....affordability, power, reliability, mpg, etc.? For CPO models, most 550's will usually have most of the bells and whistles included. For 528's, most pre owned models are pretty basic and you'll have a harder time finding a CPO 528 with M-sport, CA, etc. Aside from that, based solely on a car, my wife chose a 528 because mpg was an important factor. It's definitely not under powered and having previously owned a MB SUV, getting 14-18mpg s*cks arse living in LA so we steered clear of anything 8 cyl. I have a 535 GT and love it so personally, I'd recommend a 535 because it's a good compromise with power and fuel economy. Plus, if you ever decide to upgrade your exhaust setup, you'll have more options.

It has way more power than you can use safely and legally even in uncongested areas in the US. Also, acceleration isn't that much fun in this car because you don't hear or feel anything. It accelerates extremely fast, but it doesn't feel that way. I can't decide if the extra power is worth the hit you take with the MPG, and having to visit a gas station more frequently. |

For overall enjoyment and solid reliability, I would go with the 535.
A loaded up 535 will cost more than a standard issue, 550, however, it is more car in my opinion. The 550 is great (I have had two of them), however, the V8 tends to have a few more issues as time goes on. Additionally, the 535 sounds better and has the option to have the factory M Sport Exhaust installed. The 550 literally produces no exhaust note--unlike the old X5 with the V8. Which is tragic in my opinion.

I test drove a 535i and a 528i the other day under local driving conditions, not on highway. I have to be honest that I didn't expect much from the 528i, but found it more fun to drive, especially in sport mode. Granted, they were very short drives with not a lot of room to bring out the full potential of the 535i. If you do a lot of highway driving and get a lot of seat time, I would probably recommend the 535i.
If you drive mostly locally with an occasional trip, then you will probably not be disappointed with the 528i. The M sport looks just as amazing as the m sport 535i, but the wheels are 18s instead of 19s. The 528i M sport wheels and tires look much better in person than they do in pictures. Hope this helps. |

Bought the wife a 528i since she wanted maximum MPG and didn't care about "power". She now regrets it when compared to my X5 50i.
The car gets the job done but low rpm it is a bit gutless and feels lazy on its feet, whereas a 535i with its ample torque feels responsive at any rpm/load. If my wife can make this preceding observation then anyone coming from a N5x engine car will easily feel the same. Go for the 535i! |

Some additional threads that might help you with your decision.

Figure out what your priorities are then test drive all 3. I think you'll just know which one is right for you, much easier decision than it seems right now. |

Like many have said, it depends on your needs and preferences. Mine is a daily driver and road tripper. For me, the 528i is perfect, surprisingly powerful, and gets amazing mileage. No matter which one, you can't go wrong with any of them. Good luck!
