Looks good, I got my F07 ( 530D SE GT ) with standard sound ( 4 x mids and 2 x subs ) be nice to upgrade to top Hifi tweeters in front door pillars and the mids in the doors and see how that rocks as the bass is good from under the seat just needs more clarity ,definition and height

has anyone done just that ? on F07 or F10 / F11

is there a schematic were to understand ohm values for different setup?
I have a european x3/f25 model with professional navigation so no clue what is the hifi setup.
I know I have no tweeters but I bought cheap used top-hifi tweeter willing to add these to the existing mid/sub unit.
Will I affect (lower) the impedance?

Thanks

The Stereo underseat woofers are connected in parallel to the door mids, thus the 4 wires at the woofers. All mid and underseat speakers are 4 ohms in the Stereo system, but because the front and the underseat woofers are connected in parallel the iDrive front load is 2ohms. The iDrive is stable at 2 ohms.

Why all this explanation?

When you replace the OEM speakers in the Stereo system you are actually changing as well the load to the iDrive unit. Because the front and woofers are connected in parallel then things could get messy if the load drops below 2 ohms -as in replacing the mid and underseat woofers with Top HiFi (677) speakers for example. Top HiFi mid + tweeters speakers become 2ohms when connected together and the woofers are 4 ohms by themselves. When connected in parallel (not designed to be connected in parallel in the 677 or 676 systems) they will create a load to the iDrive of 1.33ohm.

The iDrive unit is not stable at 1.33ohm.

So before any speakers are replaced in the Stereo system you should take a look to what you are actually doing to the iDrive unit. The system will sound great at the beginning just because the lower the load the higher the power output. But that higher output comes with more heat inside the iDrive unit. More heat that was not intended by design to be there.

Your iDrive unit will overheat sooner or later, and then it will just fail.

Take care...
Is it mean not recommended to add speaker from 6 to 10 in standard sys? Thks

if replacing audio base loudspeakers (single midange without tweeter) with hifi speakers (midrange PLUS tweeter) is there any problem for the audio amp to drive two speakers (less resistance value) instead of a single one?

No -- tweeters in this context don't significantly change the load presented to the amplifier.

By the way, great job and thanks for sharing. For the record, you *could* have contacted us for plug and play upgrades which sound EVEN better than the Harman Kardon speakers.

Micah... this is the Stereo system, not the HiFi. The 6.5" woofers are connected in parallel to that single mid. Adding a tweeter to the mid will make 3 speakers connected in parallel, thus increasing the load/decreasing the impedance unless something is done with the woofer.

The iDrive unit can handle 2ohms according to BMW. Less than that and the unit will overheat.

This has to be done the right way.

Again, if your standard system is the Stereo then you should disconnect the woofers from the mid and then add the tweeters.

This has to be done anyways for two reasons, impedance and to make the woofers sound the best with what you got. They should have their own amplifier channel so each can be tuned/crossovered more efficiently. There is no filter or crossover between the woofer and the mid with the iDrive system, so the sound is just split (highs/mids/lows) by each speaker own frequency response and that's it.

Got it thks

So is it a choice between tweeter/ woofer unless amp is added for the latter?

Correct, if you want to do it the right way.

Btw, i have come across this
http://www.focal.com/en/dedicated-driverspeaker-kits/396-ifbmw-c-3544051750530.html

Is it compatable with f10 ?if yes, just replace front door speaker with this and sys safely improved? Thks

I do not know if the new Focal set fits the F10 -if it fits the E92 then most probably it fits the F10. Regardless, you still have to separate the woofers from the mids anyways.

oh no
thanks tech

Manual says that it is compatible with 1 Series, 3 Series and X1
can't imagine why 5 series is not on the list
http://www.focal.com/en/dedicated-dr...050750531.html

may be first stage, cut woofer & install some compatible stuff like ifbmw-s ( rock & roll is not my cup of tea)
then second stage amp for woofer ( any cheap & simple installed amp in the market recommended?)

Ooops!

i just found this from BMW HK: Radio BMW Professional, four-channel amplifier ( have amp in standard stock?), double-tuner reception,
aerial diversity, scan function, CD drive with MP decoder, six loudspeakers.

That's your iDrive unit. There is no external OEM amp in your car.

What is the meaning of 4-channel amp?i suppose this mean amp for 2 front speakers and 2 rear speakers.
Sorry for such stupid question

The iDrive unit has a built-in 25W x 4 (max) amplifier.

Yes you have mentioned earlier

The idrive is stable at 2 ohm

Am i do it the right way as follows:

Front: 2 Tweeter + 2 mid speaker in parallel
Rear: 2 woofer + 2 mid speaker in parallel

You need to run new cables to the underseat woofers (thus separating the front from the woofers), that's the easiest and the right way.
